Steering Help

Post by kj0 » Mon Aug 29, 2011 6:49 pm

HI All.

Just a quick one. I've got a lot of play in my steering wheel. To tun right out of the street this morning it was almost 3/4 turn.

What could be the cause?
Worn bushings?
refill and bleed power steering fluid?

etc.
Thanks.

A few more details would be good - such as the model of subaru we're talking...

And when you say 3/4 of a turn to turn right out of the street this would seem normal to me - you need to turn the steering wheel to steer the vehicle in the direction you want to go.

If you mean that there was 3/4 of a turn of the steering wheel before any steering of the vehicle occurred I would NOT be driving it any further!
Check all the steering joints/knuckles under the bonnet and make sure that the steering rack is bolted in properly and that the bushes are in good condition, if they're looking dodgy replace them.

Cheers

Impreza 05 GX.

nope, it's not normal, not for power steering. it's a little less than 180degrees too far.

Agreed details are always handy

have someone operate the steering wheel and follow the components along until you find the slack, could be anything
