Engaging out of 4WD CLUNK

Recently bought '90 L Series Touring wagon (my 1st). Engaging 4WD is fine - and it seems all normal/no probs (haven't taken it 'proper' off-road yet - just tested it on sandy grassy patch etc). But cannot engage out of 4WD. So when I get back on sealed road it drives for a bit, then CLUNK - out of 4WD back to FWD... If anyone could shed any light on this it would be much appreciated! Oh, and it's 5sp man.

don't have the 4WD engaged on a bitumen surface it binds the box and diffs up this is what the clunk is when it comes out of 4WD

just before you get back to the bitumen slow down and disengage the 4WD if it won't put the car in reverse and then reverse slowly and disengage the 4WD

Its just because there is a bit of built up tension in the drive train

When you disengage, either stab the throttle or brake while moving the 4wd lever and it should pop out.

Thanks Toonga. I'll try reversing to disengage.
Becuase I couldn't get it to disengage, I didn't have a choice... had to go onto the sealed road! It's not a pleasant sounding clunk eh...

Cheers Suparoo... I'll try this too.
