Front brake shims (L-Series)

Post by Dave72 » Thu Apr 07, 2011 9:13 am

Hey everyone,

I'm getting a nice little rattling sound whenever I go over a bump in my 92 L-Series wagon... and after finding a loose inner steering arm joint, worn sway bar bushes, I think I've pin pointed it to be the brake shim, which is noticably loose. As far as I can tell, they have been installed in the right position (I had K-Mart do a pad change a while back), but I don't really see what makes them a tight fit (I haven't taken the calipers apart yet)... are there any tips or tricks for the shims installation?

Cheers,
Dave

G'day dave

That sounds like its about right. Shims don't rattle around as far as I know. They should be a little loose anyway as this means that the caliper is released and thus no pressure on the brake disc.

As for the rattle I would be looking at some of the panels around in that area, such as the tin one below the radiator can rattle around if not secured properly.

I hope Kmart are looking after you...

Cheers
