Hey guys.. ive recently just put another EJ22 in my Gen1 liberty. Ive noticed with my old engine it also did this but now the new one is also doing it.
When i first start the car up it wont idle properly untill i rev it a fair bit and then it will start to idle a bit better... Its ok when its warm its just when its more cold that it does it.
What do you reckon it could be? I was thinking either my ecu is getting confused or something to do with choke or something?
If not my only other option is dirty fuel??
Any help would be greatly appreciated on this

Hey Bob, did you use the original manifold? is so then I'm guessing it's the IAC valve. Best to remove it and clean it with a bit of carby clean

I used the manifold that came with the new motor. sorry.... whats the IAC valve?

No probs bud.. IAC is the Idle Air Control Valve that sits just to the side of the throttle body. Do you have a copy of the Workshop Manual for your model?

look for the ~1" flexible pipe running from your intake piping (after the airbox) to the side of the manifold. It connects to your Idle Air Control valve.

Yeah i think i worked it all out.. just gotta pull it off now and have a look.
Ive also noticed this new motor is... well... GUTTLESS... which im not sure whether its to do with the IAC or something... like in 3rd gear if you put your foot down it takes ages to get up to top speed and it also like surges every couple of seconds... like its missing or something
How does timing work on these motors.. because it seems to rattle a little when low revs and you put your foot down which sounds like timing is out to me...

Ok ive pulled the IAC valve off and cleaned the hell out of it, put it back on and nope... still idles rough at first start up.. then idle picks up and it settles down
what about the power? i mean usually this car is pretty quick but now it just struggles alot.. you can feel it surging for more power when putting foot down

I would get timing belt checked out, other thing i could think of is to check for any leakage in air inlet manifold.
Does it stall? is it manual or automatic?

I would definately check the timing and also I'd recommend a compression check.

It has a new timing belt.
As for the air leak... im not too sure but i will check it out tomorrow
What about AFM? Could that be a problem as well because i have another one of them in the shed?
How is the timing checked? just by timing light?
Compression seems fine.. the last motor i had did the same thing and that had fine comp

Ill see how i go... just running out of ideas

No harm in trying another AFM if they are the same and you know the condition of the spare.. My daugther's friend (gleno) had a similar thing and it turned out to be the AFM.

Who fitted the timing belt? because I have seen it many times where people have used the arrow on the crank pulley to line up the timing belt but have the camshafts in the correct spot but like you say both engines are doing the same thing.

yeah.. ill give the afm a go today and see if the inlet is leaking but i dont think it is
anyone got like a detailed picture of an EJ22 engine bay? just so i can have a little look to make sure everything is hooked up right? like hoses and air lines etc?
Or if anyone would be willing to have a look at it for me from perth ???

IACV could be faulty as well.

Checked and cleaned IACV.. not that.. trying AFM and Map sensor in 2 mins so ill see how it goes

just a thought Bob when was the last time you cleaned the pod filter?

its pretty clean... i just changed map sensor and AFM and no difference
Im running out of ideas now

Ok done a diagnostic test... came back with error 22... Knock sensor
So how do i fix this?

Replace knock sensor.
