MY07 Impreza, Sluggish below 2500rpm. Why??

Post by Troy_McClelland » Wed Mar 10, 2010 9:08 pm

Hi guys, I just bought a MY07 Impreza sedan and have noticed something that seems not right...

When shifting gears, the car really struggles if im around 2000rpm but as soon as I hit 2500rpm the car takes off. Is there a problem with my injectors or something of the like. Or do i just need to maintain revs above 2500rpm (which seems ridiculous to me).

Help would be much appreciated,
Cheers

Firstly Hi and welcome to the club :)

I'm going to assume that your Impreza is NOT a turbo model and would have to say if it's a MY07 then you'd really need to check out te service history  as I'm just guessing at this stage (as lots more info is needed to diagnose the problem) that the services that have been done without using 'Upper Cylinder Cleaner' :( This is a common problem with the Subies if services are done without the cleaner.

BTW, how many kms has the car done?

Is its a 2.0I or 2.0R?
If its an R, you need to run them on 98RON fuel.
But for either engine, a can of SA459 would help.

Thanks for the reply guys. Its an 2.0R and has 55000kms. It is due for the 50000km service so will make sure the mechanic checks everything out for me when I get that done and ask him about using upper head cleaner. Previous services have been carried out by a subie dealer so I thought they would know what they were doing.

I first half filled it with regular unleaded before realising that the premium is recommended.

What is SA459??

Thanks again

Not so, there were 2 EJ20 engines used in the 2007 Impreza, but both used 90RON regular unleaded

The first one was just a SOHC 2.0L which produced 92kW at 5600rpm, this was available on the base model. The second was a DOHC 2.0L with active valves which produced 118kW at 6400rpm, which was available on the R and RS models

Is it an auto, Subaru autos can feel a little sluggish at low rpm, especially with a 2.0L

have a read of this

and consider the possibility that one of your TGV Motors or sensors could be faulty

Is it a GD (2007 MY07) or a GE (2007 MY08) body style?

Hi, its a manual so that rules that out. Its a dec 06 built but 07 compliance, i.e. 2006 MY07

read page nine sorry this problem happens in manuals as well

showthread.php?t=16210&page=9

the Tumbler Generator Valve has caused quite a few problems since it was introduced to lower emissions at start up (its primary use)

I know there was 2 different engines, that's why I asked if it was a 2.0I or 2.0R.
And to be talking about RS's, you must mean MY08 and on.

Your wrong about the 2.0R fuel, they need 95RON minimum, but we run 98RON in our's as it seems less hesitant - plus the "cleaning" benefits, more km's to a tank etc etc.
A copy and paste from a Subaru bulletin below;
Category: Technical
Region/Zone: National
Date: 12th January 2007
Distribution: General
Reference: SIB-T-002-2007
Subject: 2.0R (DOHC Engine) Impreza and 2.0R (DOHC Engine) Liberty
Performance
1. To maintain factory specified performance levels in either an 2.0R Impreza or a 2.0R Liberty it
is essential to use unleaded fuel with an octane rating of 95RON or greater.
2. Similarly, to maintain factory performance levels, the engine oil in the 2.0R Impreza and 2.0R
Liberty must be either 5W30 SM full synthetic or 10W30 SM mineral (10W30 SM semi
synthetic or modified mineral is also ok).
3. If you encounter a customer complaint of poor performance in a 2.0R Impreza or 2.0R Liberty
please confirm both the fuel and engine oil are as specified above.
To the O.P, if it's 5k over for a major service, that's not doing you any favour's either.

SA459 is the upper cylinder cleaner.

Thanks for all your help guys. I guess I will start with getting the service done and using 95 RON or better and see how that goes. I will make sure I mention it when I send it in for the service so they can just check everything out.

Thanks again.
Cheers
