Hi all,

Some of you may be aware that we are getting a bit of rain here in Brisbane at the moment!!

I'm wondering what you Brumby and/or MY owners have done to improve the demister? Mine blows really hard on the passenger side but is next to useless on the driver's side (where it really needs to work). Is this normal or have I got something wrong under the dash? I have a dash mat on but that shouldn't be the problem.

I am considering blocking up part of the vent on the passenger side (and part of the outlet for the passenger window).

One more thing, with my temp setting on full cold, the air coming out of that demister is HOT and heats up the cabin quicksmart. Is this normal or have I got another problem back there?

Just a guess, sounds like the foam may have fallen apart with age. The heat up prob sounds like it could be one of 2 things. The heat dial may not be working ( not moving the cable ) or the cable has come off or in some cases, the cable comes out of the clip that holds it.

Thing called a heater tap under bonnet that is at the other end of the cable on the hot cold adjuster dial - have a look to see if cable works the tap. WINDSCREEN/ FEET selector is also cable. The foam is a seal on top of the heater box that crumbles with age. At least a five hour job dash out and back in to rep[lace foam seal and check all plastic ducks. I also fitted the non air cond duck between fan box and heater box as I no longer had AC and found the AC evap and its mesh chockers with a million kms of dirt, dust and fluff. Blows hard and even now

With my Brumby, I just drive with the windows down. If you have air conditioning, you could use that, but would take away all of your power.

demister?...defogging the windows? referred to as defrosting here,frost or not...comment on using ac has me confused.

My L Series demister is rubbish. (Dreading the start of winter)

Last winter the fog inside the car got so bad I couldn't even see where I was going or where I had been. Had to pull over every 5 minutes.

Good tip.

I'll need to give mine a look over. Hot cold works but depends on the temp outside also for me. But foot duct is always hot. But the filter is something I'll need to check. Also need to get the A/C leak checked to find the leak.

Can someone PM a recommended A/C workshop in Brisbane? Thanks (Sorry about the hyjack)

The a/c dries out the air thus demisting or defoging it because in Queensland its the humidity that causes it. When I had it i used airconditiong every time it fogged up because it works straight away but in winter i turn the heat up as well to clear the ice off the windscreen. although in canada we didnt need the air con till summer!

The best setting for defogging/demisting is with the the AC on and the temperature on HOT.

Air conditioning strips moisture from the air (this is why air-cons drip water) and the heat warms the glass so it warmer than the ambient air, this makes it impossible for moisture to condense on it.

I have the same problem in my brumby, on the upper vent the air is cold but on feet or defrost it blows hot air. Some times I have to put the aircond on for a while then switch it to defrost but that doesn't last long.

Yes if you do not have A/C in your L series it would be unbearable in winter. Mine will not demist without it.

its interesting what you can learn from your neighboors, even distant ones. i imagine the humidity is too great for glass anti fog treatments also? as here in the winter and rain a water leak will cover the inside of glass with almost a dripping wet fog.

Glass anti fog treatment like RAIN X, I used it once with mixed results and my boss complained it messed up his vision through windows in morning sunlight. I think Ford Falcons demister function has automatically turned AC on whenever selected for past 22 years now.
