Trouble starting engine

Hi Guys.

I have had my L Series for around 2 and a half years now and this issue has always been bugging me so I thought right im going to get to the bottom of this and fix it.

Whether the engine is hot or cold i have to pump the accelerator to start the engine. I can never just turn the key and off it goes.

I know its only a small issue but it annoys the hell out of me when I am out and someone else needs to move my car to get theirs out and either ends up draining the battery trying to get it started or floods the engine constantly trying to turn the engine over for 10 minutes. (I hate having a non mechanical family)

So if anyone could help me out that would be great.

Thanks

(BTW its a carbed EA82)

the first thing is to replace the fuel filters.
there is one under the tank near the rear wheel and there may be one in the engine bay. cheap and easy to do.
then take the distributor cap off and check it is not rusted up inside.

Thanks for that.

The fuel filter is new (was changed during its last major service around 2000km ago)

I will check the dizzy when I get home today

Surely.....if this is a carby engine it has fuel sitting at the correct level in the float chamber just ready to be drawn through the various jets of the carby to be turned into a combustable mix and ignited by a spark plug. Is the choke working, as in activating when you jump in turn ignition on then press acc pedal once and back off again and choke flap closes or partially closes to suit current temperature of engine? I think you have an electric choke unit need ing ignition on then to allow fast idle position on throttle you have foot on acc pedal to set it and fot off before starting should leaeve it in fast idle position, cranking fast enough should fire up. New plugs and check plug gaps? Another handy tip is get a pressure can of some sort of carby cleaner and read instructions, usually remove air filter top, run car to warm so no stall and get a few revs up to 1500 or so and spray this stuff in top of carby to clean up air bleed jets and all sorts of other bits like choke butterfly that gets gunked up with carbon over time. Tune up in a can sometimes!
