Intermittent overheating

Post by Venom » Wed Aug 12, 2009 8:08 pm

Last week my L series overheated because i was lazy and wasn't checking the water levels. Lucky i had just left Bennies and he was able to help me out. Anyway since then i've had trouble with the car overheating. It only happens when i'm cruising at low revs, e.g 60-80 in 4th, 80-100 in 5th. As soon as i shift down a gear e.g 60 in 3rd the temperature drops straight back down to normal. Same at 100 if i shift from 5th to 4th the temp drops to normal. This is while pulling a loaded trailer. Without the trailler it does the same thing, but the temps don't go any higher than when i'm using lo-range. I don't have a tacho so i can't say at what revs this is happening at.

Car is an L series with EJ25D, not sure exactly what radiator but i think its a liberty one.

I'm guessing it could be either the thermostat not working correctly, or there's an air pocket in the radiator. Any ideas?

check if you have air pocket it might be that... When was the last time you replaced the thermostat?
Sorry to ask, is there coolant or just water in the system?
Cheers

Solved. I hosed what seemed like a few kg of dirt out of the radiator. Temp gauge hasn't moved off cold since. Still put in a new thermostat and fresh coolant just in case. I think i'll give my car a decent clean after i take it off road next time

Probably a good idea lol. I had a CV boot tie go through my radiator, it messed it up bad.

Got a new one, and ever since the car has been running sweet. The guy i got it from said to make sure that you fill them, run them then check the levels again he said that on models that have the thermostat at the bottom of the engine people always get air pockets and dont realise.
