Lifter ticking after oil change
Lifter ticking after oil change
Hi all
My EA82 has had its episodes of the dreaded lifter ticking in the past but only for a couple of hours then it disappears for a few months.
I had been using 20W50 for the last year or so on the engine but a few mates have told me that 15W40 was the way to go with EA engines as the thinner oil works better with them.
So I changed the oil to 15W40 and ever since the ticking just won't go away.
I was told that the thinner oil helps prevent the ticking as it doesn't get all gunked up on the lifters like 20W50.
Anyone got any ideas?
It has only happened since the oil change so I am tempted to drain this and go back to 20W50 as the engine sounds shocking when it ticks :P
Thanks

With mine, EA82, 20-50 makes it worse and 10-30 weight keeps it quiet.
Maybe give it some more time, like a cuppla weeks and see what happens, then change it back if you have too.

Gonna take it for a run up the freeway and down through the hills to keep the revs up for a couple of hours.
That way the oil will get flushed through entirely.
Will see if its still there after that if not I will give it a couple of weeks and see what happens.

EA82T and yes, my old friend, the lifter ticker comes and goes. I'm sick of worrying about it. Went over to Woodford from Toowoomba (Bout 2hr drive) after putting 2 bottles of Nulon Lifter free?? in it. When I got to Woodford, it was as quiet as a church mouse. But. it came back today and no doubt will come and go.
Might start building up an EJ ready for one day...

I forgot to mention that mine usually taps a bit after a oil change for a cuppla days regardless of what I use and then settles down, seems like air needs to be slowly bled out of the lifters whenever the oil is changed.

I think give it about 2 weeks, put up with it and see how it goes, if its still there in 2 weeks later then it may need attention?

Just to keep everyone up to date.
Its been around 2 weeks and I have bared with the ticking but it still not getting any better.
So I have decided that next weekend I will drain this and put the thicker oil back in.
(I know most people just ignore the ticking, but I spent alot of money and time getting my exhaust just nice and this seems to spoil that nice sound I have been working on)
