befor im late to work, ea82t new heads and gaskets( 2weeks old)... running a bit rough now with water coming out exhaust.

comp tested cyclinders 120 all round, car hasn't over heated in the 2 weeks.

any ideas?

intake manifold gasket(s)?

join the club, never overheated mine, equipped with watchdog too and pressurising cooling system. 25,000km since heads done, 3000 since new valve springs.

Is this within the first few minutes of running,.. sure its not condensation?

If you are using coolant,.. im with timmo... quite likely to be intake manifold gaskets

seems to be running rough, with coolant when it wants to out the exhaust. drove from work (15ish min) to home no coolant or smoke from the exhaust. i ordered intake gaskets today (even tho new ones were put on when heads were) it was my first thought after comp test.

i only thought to check coolant today when i noticed it was running slightly warmer (still befor half way on the gauge tho)

fingers crossed its only the intake gaskets, if not any one got a spare motor laying around? made after 1990?

So its intermittent? Seems strange

So how much coolant did it use?

Why does it have to be a 1990 or later motor?

If its intermitant,i know what it is,first check your spark plugs to see if you can locate a clean plug...aka this will be the offending cylinder.
If you find 2 clean cylinders on one side..it will be the intake gasket leaking into both ports
if you find no clean cylinders it is a crack down the exhaust port and only allows water to pass out under boost.
If it is one clean plug..which i doubt as you just fitted new gaskets.....well then it will be a headgasket on the indicative cylinder...or could be a leak from the intake gasket to only one cylinder..but again if they are new this is unlikely to be only in one cylinder...have a look and let us know what you find.

i dont mean to cause alarm, but here's my recent story...

and i'm bring this up as you say "new heads"

bought an engine where the heads checked out fine - no cracks between valves etc. compression on the engine was good-great, but there was still exhaust gas in the coolant (and the checker i bought from repco proved this). turns out there was cracks in the head, but not in the normal places - there were cracks in the coolant lines, specifically the one i noticed was on the front drivers side, the head stud at the top of the front of the head - there was coolant coming out of the bolt hole right above it.

i had no coolant temperature problems, good gaskets all round, heads checked out fine - just if only they tested the coolant system on the head it would have shown the problem.

lucky for me, my old engine's heads were great, so now they are on i have compression between 136-130-130-125 compression on my 1-2-3-4 cylinders (was 125-100-132-138) and now coolant in the exhaust.

moreso, buy the co2 in the coolant tester from repco and you'll know for sure if it's really bad or not...

the heads were repaired and pressure tested (friends shop) so im not doubting there work, im going to replace intake gaskets while i switch intakes (one with no emission gear) so i have no vac leaks. if thats not the problem next step is removing turbo header and checking for cracks in the exhaust ports.

if the exhaust ports have cracked this wouldn't show up with a comp test would it?

but what did they pressure test? the combustion chamber or the cooling system?

they pressure tested the heads, on a bench. the bottom end of the engine is fine.

i have comp tested the cyclinders with no ill figures.

on my way to pick up new belts and intake gaskets.

If you have a crack in your exhaust port, you will loose water and it wont affect your compression readings

thats what i thought but with heads that were "new" when put on, 2 weeks driving shouldnt crack the exhaust ports.

removed the intake and the drivers side gasket altho new didn't look to flash, and to make matters worse the parts store ordered in the wrong gaskets and informed me they can't get the ones im after! so i've used silicon gasket stuff for the time being.

plugs look all right to me, but the two from the drivers side were more white on the wire part of the plug (is this a indication of leaking intake gasket?)

if the exhaust ports were cracked this shouldn't affect the running of the car would it? since its on the arse end of the engine running process. a part from loosing coolant and over heating.

No the crack wont do anymore than leak coolant and allow it to overheat..but thats enough :-(

Cross your fingers that the side with the 2 cleaner plugs is indicating the intake gasket may have been the problem..
let us know what you find when you reassemble it and run the engine with the new seal a gasket stuff you used..

so what's wrong with mne? seems to take until operating temp to then over pressurise my cooling system. When I firts got the car, the cooked engine had a brown stain down inlet man gaskets into intake port of head. figured this caused engine to be killed by persons unknown, who fitted a reco radiator, tried various chemical fixes. That engine gave same symptoms as I have now but on start up also, heads were cracked and rewelded and in use now. all other heads were also cracked....

ok i bolted down other intake but it seams to be worse now, constant steam/water looks like the heads are coming off one day when i find the time. surely 2 weeks wouldnt kill heads/gaskets, standard boost and never over heated!

what are others methods of putting heads on inregards to the head gasket? just so i know i didn't stuff up that step.

oh forgot to mention went for a 2min drive in it, started to get real hot real quick. idle was fine and it cooled but driving heated things up and over pressurized the radiator resivor (coolant on under side of bonnet)

think i've found my problem hopefully...

drivers side exhaust port might be cracked there was some coolant pushing through the gasket at a regular pace(shity na exhaust gasket).

pull the turbo headers off and have a better look over weekend

that is gonna mean water or steam goin through the turbo too! Hot real quick? Mine doesn't get hot, just starts pumping coolant at reservoir after about 10km. How is yer radiator? One of those infra red point it style thermometers can be handy to poke around the radiator to see if it has hot spots.

radiator is fine was running 2 weeks no problems till this.
