Hi guys.

I got back from a 500k trip the other day and and noticed a hissing/whooshing type noise that seems to be coming from my alternator or one of the fan belts.

It doesn't seem to be affecting the engine but just makes it sound like shit.

anyone know where it could be coming from and how to fix it.

Thanks all

Constant hissing or intermitant?

Try running without the belts, maybe one at a time and see if the noise stops.
This may help you locate where it is coming from.

try trace the noise from under the engine, above engine and have a good listen where its coming from... Could be one of the idler bearings on its way...
Cheers

Sounds like it can be the Alt bearing. Take a wooden dowel or long screwdriver and carefully put one end to the ALt and one end to your ear while the car is running. If the alt is the source (and at that mileage it prbbly is if original) you should be able to hear it.

Whilst engine is turned off, try giving the alternater pulley a little wobble and see if there is any movement. It sounds like its on its last legs.

My alternator made a metallic shringly noise of other good words to describe it.
I belive it was the bearing making such noise so I replaced it. Noise gone

Edit: If I put a couple of loose spikes in a small metallic box, close the lid and shaked it I think it would make a similar sound. lol
