oil in my airbox!!

Vehicle: 1993 subaru L series sportswagon, standard ea82, 335000km on it, rebuilt carburettor, tuned and fussed over a LOT.
Popped the top of the airbox off to find oil everywhere. Not really scungy looking oil, quite clean really. Not sure where it came from, maybe crankcase ventilation pipes? I have air injection pipes plugged cause I can't stand the popping, and the throttle nudging system is gone vamoose caput, It was causing HUGE vacuum leaks and making the engine rev up.
Recently drove the car from bathurst to kandos and back via sofala, gave it a bit of a floggin up and down the hills. I was told it blew a bit of blue smoke at times which I would expect from a car this old.
My air injection plumbing/mystery boxes appear to be leaking a bit as well, down near the distributor. I am planning on taking them off and fitting a blanking plate to the relevant holes. This wouldn't have anything to do with the oil however.
I'm a little undecided as to what to do about the oil everywhere, anyone had this happen before? I'm going to have to pull apart a lot of plumbing in the hope of neatening it up and so on.

Its a common problem, you said air box, do you mean air cleaner as you said carbie. On the passenger side the tube from the rocker cover to the air cleaner goes to a T piece then to the air cleaner. The T piece has a small port only going to the air filter. Ditch this and replumb the hoses using 5/8" T piece. One goes to the left [as you sit in the car your left] rocker cover, one to the PCV and one to the 5/8 outlet on the air filter. Leave the small port open and discard the 5/8 hose that used to point down.
I have have subies with perfect compression fill up the air filter with oil on a long trip because of this problem

happens to all high km carby 82s. Mine did it. Its nothing to worry about.
Have a search and youll find your answers. Its a well discussed topic.

Also overfilling the crankcase with oil will completely clog your airfilter and make your subi run erratically - happened to my sister who was in a rush and added 1/2 litre of oil without properly checking the dip stick...
Fun Fun!

thanks for the help. I will go playing around with it probably on the weekend. I have a split boot on a 5000k old cv shaft to replace as well, so while i'm motivated I might do the whole lot.

carbon build up causes this..

and a Subie dealer staff member and I were discussing just this today , he reckons a little hose off the carby if broken or dislodged can cause, which or how I know not

why does the line from the passengers side crankcase to the pcv need to have a t piece to the air filter? why doesn't it just go straight to the pcv?
I have removed the large vac hose fitting on the drivers side inlet manifold (i took the anti afterburning crap off a LONG time ago as it was broken) and blanked it with a custom made steel plate, removed the air injection completely (it was leaking) and blanked it with another plate near the passengers side exhaust manifold, and I have put 5/8" hose from the passengers side crankcase to the pcv directly, the other crankcase hose on the drivers side still goes to the air filter, and i have plugged off all hoses i don't use or no longer require. I have cleaned the air filter up as best as i can, and reassembled, thinking about replacing the filter though...
I tried searching for this but "oil" "pcv" and "air" don't go into the search fields as they are too short, which leaves me with some generic words that bring up anything.
Any idea what the two hoses that come out of the top of the carburettor one at the front and one at the back are? they are bigger than the other small vac hoses used on the carburettor and were connected to some strange valves (until i broke a few of them) and now one is blocked (with a valve thingie) and the other is vented through a filter.... not sure what they do though and it intrigues me.
Ideally I want to end up with a very tidy engine bay with anything not being used removed.

the hose from the LHS rocker cover also goes to the air filter via the T fitting as the air needs to circulate all the time I suspect and that PCV valve may not open all the time - sucking into air box makes up the difference. with your other hose question dunno - there are a few different models around. I did not look to see if you state your manufacture date, but a photo of low KB like 35- 50 kb can speak a thousand words ....

the air (blowby) would go from the crankcase to the pcv valve, and i'm assuming under low manifold vac conditions there would be blowby going from the crankcase to the airbox.... hence the oil i would imagine...
Other engines I've worked on (inline fours) have a line from the crank to the manifold with a pcv valve, and a breather from the crank to the airbox.... no t pieces involved anywhere....
thinking it may be something to do with it being horizontally opposed??

yeah, also thinking these flatties don't have as much air space in crankcase as upright inlines
