Hey guys, i was wondering if anyone had thoughts on how to fix the pedal box in a 85 brumby. basically when i put the clutch in it distors a fair bit making the clutch useless. I beleive it has a crack and is only getting worse. Has anyone ever had this problem, if so any advice or pics would be greatly appreciated. Ta Pawl.

While I have not had this problem I would imagine the fix will involve removing the entire dash setup... fun fun - this will allow best access for welding and adding of plates if so desired.

If you haven't had your dash out before here's a general run-down on what's required:

There are 3 nuts along the windscreen - under the demister panel strips, these are removed by lifting the black tabs up - use a small long flat head screw driver for this.

There's another one on the steering column, one under the dash near the left and right doors, can't remember if there's any in the middle on the gearbox tunnel, pretty sure there isn't.

You'll have to undo the wiring plugs on the driver's side and same with the fans on the left hand side under the panel that covers everything under the dashboard (just above passenger's footwell, the storage tray, read below).

Pull the speedo cable out. There's two relays on the right hand side, accessable through the coin slot compartment, remove this to get in there to undo the retaining nuts (tough nuts these are!). You'll also have to pull the demister/vent pipe work off, this is relatively easy... Getting them back on is another story.

You'll also have to have the console and storage tray (just above passenger's footwell) removed to get the dash out.

The three bolts under the demister panels will be tough - they face straight up and will be painful to get off but it is achieveable. I did sunnie's dash install with the windscreen in, including taking the dash out of the donor car with the windscreen still installed...

Hope this gives you some idea of what you're in for. While you're there you might as well chuck in the 6 guage "sports" dash if you don't already have it

ye gods! There should be no reason to pull the whole dash out, just the steering column and then the pedal box itself. You will probably have to remove some of the trim around the column too. The pedal box in my brumby was pretty bad, it had cracked the clutch cable mounts, been re-welded, cracked again, and fixed with fencing wire, all by previous owners. I have cleaned it up, and straightened it, and welded in a plate to give it more strength. I haven't mounted the cable yet as the car is in a million bits due to my EJ conversion...

Yeah, Point has got it, I had to do mine and used 8m rod in spots on the inside of the pedal box to stop any flexing going on, stick weld, gave no further troubl

Hmmm... My memory of Sunnie is that the pedal box was the frame used to support the steeering column...

Hey guys, cheers for the advice. All fixed as of last night. Basically all you need to do is undo the steering column (2 bolts) then 4 bolts on the pedal box itself. Thats the easy bit. The hardest part is getting the circlips back on etc especially if you have big hands like mine, tight confined space but can be done in a couple of hours. Took the box to a welder who plated it up for a box of beer. Box was shithouse, 3 major cracks down the side and where the pedal shaft goes was almost snapped off, im surprised it even worked at all. If anyone ever needs advice id be more than happy to explain the intricasies. Cheers Pawl. PS I hope i never have to do that crap again, think i poppped a disc trying to get in under the dash.

Yeah, pedal box comes out easy. I pulled it about 3 times when doing my EJ swap. Had to mod the clutch to fit the new 5sp EJ cable, twice. And then it came out again for the Mazda 626 throttle cable swap.

Yeah, I've just picked up a pedal box for a 5 spd conversion in Sunnie - I didn't have to pull it out but can see where you're all coming from

The spark plug - if you read the thread about Sunnie the Brumby you'll see that I noted the use of the spark plug somewhere near that picture It served its purpose...
