EA81 cutting out under load

Hi all

As the title suggests the EA81 in my Brumby cuts out / misses / shudders under load (up hills or attempting to gain speed quickly). The timing looks ok at about 7 deg BTDC. I have just replaced the leads and used some engine flush and put in some good quality valvolene 15-40 synthetic oil and replaced the filter.

The engine pops when you rev it up and back off and I struggle to get it to pass 100. I generally run it on standard unleaded with no additives.

Last time I took the plugs off (reasonably new bosch ones) they all were dirty to varying degrees. I cleaned them and put them back in but to no avail.

My suspicion is that the vacuum advance on the distributor (electronic) is stuffed, though when I have the timing light on it, I do see it move if I give it a rev.

Suggestions please?

Hmmmm, lean backfire? How much pressure is your fuel pump putting out?

If you think the vac advance isn't working just take the cap off the dissy and suck on the vac line. If the rotor moves then its working, if not get someone with stronger lungs or a vac pump and try it again.

You could also try to see how much vacumm the engine is putting out at the dissy port.

I had very similar issues recently, was just a dirty fuel filter...

Talking to a mate last week - she said that the same sort of thing was happening to her - the electronic part of the dizzy (bit that replaces mechanical points) was breaking down. This could explain your problem when under load.

She paid something like $600 for a repair job or new replacement, I can't remember. But now her imaculate brumby is back on the job. Its the only problem she's had with this subi since she got it a few years ago. I think its done just over 200,000km.

Is it economical to get a dizzy reco'd? Should I get one from the wreckers and try my luck?

If there is a workshop near you that has the equipment then yeah it is economical but if you don't then it isn't. Take it out yourself and very crefully clean it up.

Had a similar thing a couple times years ago, was the filter/vapour seperator thingy from memory. Replacement from repco and it was good as gold. Was an 84 wagon though, dunno if the brumby fuel system has one. I assume it does, but you know what they say about assumptions......:???:

check the rear fuel filter brumbys have 2! I run mine on 10 degress and run premium and it seems to go quite well. Check rotor and dist cap for corrosion! Also i found the vacuum hoses around the carbie kept coming off and 1 join was broken, did what you said whenever i went thru water! Good luck and let us know what you find out.
