help! front hub nuts loose - 85 L series

Post by RogDog » Sat Nov 01, 2008 11:50 am

been happenning for a while, i have to periodically tighten the front wheel hub nuts on both sides of car. It is due to worn out threads on the driveshaft section, what is this called exactly?

I have tried Loctight but it doesnt seem to hold. will try permanent strength loctight today.

If i was to replace the driveshaft section the hub nuts go onto, how much of it do i have to replace? is it an easy job or would i need special equipment?

cheers guys, love me subi.

those threads are part of the Outer CV - you'd need a new outer CV.
It may be caused by wear on the two large washers. One looks like a normal washer but is slightly concave/convex - you need to make sure the concave part points away from the car. Also check the other "dish shaped" washer for wear, sometimes it can form a groove, if it has you really need to replace it with a new one.

what are you doing wrong in the first place?
no split pins?
not tight enough first off?
washer around the wrong way?

Loctite isnt the answer

ahh, i never noticed the washers are concaved, i'll be sure to do that properly from now on. cheers.

so yep. i do them up tight enough and have split pins but the damage was done to the threads a while back, probably from not tightening them enough and having the washers on incorrectly. so i'll need new outer CV's. not sure what that involves. There's a wreker nearby i can get them off, wondering now if it's possible with a basic toolkit. i'll go check my service manual.

cheers, Roger.

Yeah I completely screwed a hub and driveshaft by not using enough tension so I know what you mean. Its pretty hard to miss the tapered washer though. Make sure your split pin is the correct size for the hole. Don't want to be using one thats too small.
