Tapping Clicking??

Post by saxon.hall.00 » Wed Oct 08, 2008 9:39 am

Hey,

I have a Subaru, L Series, sports wagon, 1.8L, 89 model
and recently this Tapping or Clicking has stared from the engine area.

It comes and goes, and sometimes it’s louder and sometimes its not.

Just after some opinions on what it would be and if I should get it fixed, and if so how much would it cost??

Cheers.

Welcome to the 'lifter tick' club. Its harmless, well... harmless to the car atleast.

relatively harmless and very common. it would have to be question number one for all new starters here.
can be resolved, but it may come back again anyway.
replace you old oil for a start. It's always been recommended to me to use a 15W/40 rather than a 20W/50.
can be a sign that your oil pressure is low (re oil pump on the way out) or the lifters are clagged up.

i use 10w30, and i'm more inclined towards castrol over valvoline, seems to stay cleaner for longer. changed every 5000k as well...

wynns make an additive called engine tune up that is supposed to quieten lifters, it does work, i've tried it (it was free.... anything is worth a go if it is free...) it doesn't eliminate the noise but it quietens it a LOT...

wouldn't stress too much about it though.
