Hi guys/gals,

Just trying to sort out an imbalance in a brumby tailshaft..(ea82T with 5speed box)

What I know- Rear axles have just been serviced...problem not there
Diff is good....problem not there
Ran the car without the tailshaft (Stuffed rag in rear of gearbox housing...ran sweet..

So problem is in the tailshaft.

Tailshaft is in good order manufactured by company at Toombul; Brisbane

No marks, scrapes, dints and universals all good.....BUT

it has a grease nipple on each uni and they are set at 90 degrees to each other instead of 180 degrees. I have the tailshaft on my workbench.

Question:- would you expect the weight of the two grease nipples to send a significant vibration through the car enough to be noticable and massage your back????
I am going to change one over so that it is opposite the other (180deg) and see what happens...

Anyone had this sort of problem before?????

Easiest thing is to get it rebalanced by a workshop, they've got the machines to get it near on perfect first time, while it may take a few removal, refitals to get it good doing it yourself...

No.

Yes. It was a uni drying up.

Other factors like out of phase, weights falling off can also provide you with a massage. Send it away;)

Yes, I think I will get in done in Toowoomba now that its off. You are convincing me........

yeah, if you suspect it's out of balance, take it to a shop and get it balanced, easy. Just like getting your wheels done.

I have come across the following

Diff mounts , T mounts , motor mounts , diff , gear box mount , mud in inside of rim , tail shaft angle way out of wack ( space the tail shaft down )

& a few latly so bad the bottom of the dip sick under the [] in the gear box snaped off & droped into the front crown wheel

If you believe it to be the grease nipples themselves causing the imbalance - remove them first for a test run. I think that something so light would not, especially being closer to the centre of the spin - much like mag wheel lock nuts close to the centre of the wheel not causing any imbalance even though they weigh more than the rest of your nuts. A guess would be dry inside a uni joint but if you kept grease up to them you'd be upset if that was the cause

I dropped it off at Queensland Engineering Services in Toowoomba today for full tailshaft service ...hoping to get it back next day or so..I'm sure this will fix the problem as I gave it a quick run without the shaft and the vibration was gone. I want the car together for the subaru club run behind the Gold Coast this Sunday..fingers crossed...thanks to all who replied..will let you know on this thread what the problem was???

did you simply put grease in first off?

Yes, I greased it beforehand and the uni's look like they are relatively new and certainly in good condition with no play or slop evident. Just waiting now to get it back from the workshop.

I've got the tailshaft back from Queensland Engineering Services in Toowoomba. It looks good and cost me $137. Tried to make inquiries as to what was wrong but counter staff couldn't say. Docket says "Straighten and rebalance" so I'm guessing it may have had a slight bend or offset. Anyway they painted it black so that makes it look good.

No time tonight, I'll put it on tomorrow and see where I'm at, fingers crossed.

I've got the tailshaft in...took for a quick drive and all seems good. Going on the trip around the gold coast hinterland tomorrow.

I'd say the shaft may have taken a hit up at landcruiser park above Woodford near brisbane where I think they used to run it before I bought it.. Anyway I should have full four wheel drive ability again....thanks all....T
