Ej 20 knocking

My ej has a funny knock it sounds like a crook lifter(ok buckets) as when it makes the knock let motor return to idle it disappears.
Not sure wether it is a oil pump seals etc airating the oil or hydro bucket problems.
It is pot number three clossest one to the turbo.
Any other ideas

Dead big end bearing. If it happens every time the engine is at speed, I'd suggest it needs the bearings replaced - could probabily be done without taking out the pistons or heads, you'd need to consult an EJ manual or guru...
If you've constantly over revved the engine or let it run low on oil this is the end result - If you don't know the history on the engine and you haven't been gunning it hard all the time I'd be saying that the engine didn't have a very nice life before you got it.
That's my thoughts from your description

how does it sound when you start it dead cold (thats when big ends make the most noise)

Fair call, maybe I need to slow down a bit...
Do you warm up the car before giving it a flogging? This will help shag out the big end bearings too.

I pretty sure its not big end etc as only seems to do it when warm.
Happens about 10mins after running eg when motor is doing about 2000 rpm put my foot on clutch motor returns to idle let clutch out again and it goes away.
I think the knock seems too slow also to be a big end.
Thats why i was on the lines of it cam follower as sounds like an old ford with a lifter that has died.
For the first 3-5 mins of warming up its at idle (got to open gate etc)
Have had race bikes as well as operated earthmoving equipment.
I well and trully dont give it much when motor is stone cold.

Found out why it had a sound like a hydralic lifter problem i found that i had a little drip of oil around hi pressure line to turbo it had a hair line split in the line. Braisesd it up and anealed copper washers etc. Back together with no leaks etc. Guess air was causing cam folower problems.
Got me thinking though Big end bearings are not that hard to replace so will be doing them this weekend also as the knock sensor has a higher reading then normal at no load settings.
As it knocks and carries on on colder starts.
Just wondering wat big end bearing cap bolt tension bolts need to be? torque settings

HUH........did u even look into it as far as im aware the block has to be split on the EJ's
i only thought the EA82's were able to be done through the sump

Yes Yes you are right had the sump off and there is a x over pipe under number 1 cylinder. Duh never mind fixed up a dent in the sump and checked for sludge and bits that could of been in the wrong places. All good..
Fixed up a few leaks on the rocker covers (new washers).
Caught up with a mate thats a mechanic thats played and owned wrxs he said because i was running a semi synthetic 10 50 w and the motors isnt fresh/ older i should run an aditive that doesnt thicken the oil like a Lucas product Said it will reduce the cold start knock.
Tried it all good only had two cold starts and seems to have reduced knock.
Got me thinking also i think i might be doing myself an ej20g rebuild.
With a few good bits inside so i can run a little more of the good stuff reliably.
