Having problems with fuel supply and idle adjustment on 85 L-series wagon. I'm out bush, so especially keen to understand what's happening.

The idle point moves all over - I'm constantly adjusting it.

Sometimes I have loss of power and I have to do the routine of pulling the air filter off and tapping the carburetor above the ?needle valve. This is a pain, although I can do it pretty fast now.

Starting can be a problem; sometimes need to manually adjust the idle up, flood the system with trying to start, let it sit for a minute and then she'll start.

I've pulled the fuel pump out and tested it - almost a liter a minute, so it seems fine.

Any tips or suggestions greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you may need a carbie re-build. Not hard to do, just need a carbie kit and some spare time. The kit would be around $50.

While you've got the carbie apart, blow some compressed air through every little hole you can find. This should remove any crud you have in there.

Put it all back together, replace the fuel filter and go from there.

Pleased to have found you guys. I put a kit through an old toyota carbie once, so I've some idea. Although I was hoping that wasn't going to be the answer (-:

It'll be a while before I get near any way of getting a kit, so any ideas on what I might be able to check or do in the mean time could be useful.

Just for the record...

While I think there were multiple issues, and the carbie probably would still benefit from a kit, the thing that sorted this out was an $8 rotor. The old one had gotten so flogged that it wasn't sitting tight, and was moving around about ? 20 or thirty degrees, sometimes holding at one end, sometimes at the other.
