Right car, wrong carby!

Hello, my name is Tina, I live in Geraldton is WA.
At the moment I am a suffering 92 Brumby 1800 owner.
My partner, Ryan and I decided to redo the gaskets etc. on the carby, which seemed all well and good, until....it appears that the carby and manifold thats on our 1800 is actually for a 1600.
Any how, after a bit of rootin' around its back in, float level seems fine, but she's running like a hairy goat. Under acceleration it's fine, but idling or taking corners she's surging. On starting we need to pump the accelerator a few times. We've set the float level at 10.5mm as suggested in the paper work.
Ryan was wondering that the bigger engine may require the float level to be 9mm or similar.
Please, has anybody got any suggestions?

Does a small squirt of fuel get pumped down the carby inlet when the pedal is pumped? If not, then you may not have the accelerator pump working properly, which would mean that you have to pump it and it will hesitate when coming out off corners. This may be a linkage fault or a problem with the diaphragm on the plunger itself.

Thank you Busdriver for your assistance.
I'm pretty sure fuel is getting into the carby, though I'll have to wait till my other half gets back next weekend to check.
The reason we did the repair kit to begin, was, that the pump wasn't working.
I do remember Ryan saying however, that the diaphragm looked fine.
