L-Series Surging

Gday all...

I am having some issues with the Soob. When I am accelerating I notice that there is a fair bit of surging and it is more noticeable on the warmer days although it isn't isolated to them.

I am thinking something electrical(coil or leads)or maybe since I have been running the tank down to lower than normal(fuel prices!!) I am getting a lot of crud in the filter and it is slowly blocking up.

I am swaying to the coil however any suggestions would be welcomed. It is the MPFI version of the EA-82 and not the carb-ed version. It is a manual and not the auto...

I have had suggestions on the defence forums to use the Upper engine cleaning foam from Subaru(has been about 10K since I have done this)as I use my car mainly for the short 10km trip to work and back. Havent done a long trip for a while....

Your welcomed advice is appreciated...

A few suggestions:

Avoid using ethanol blended fuel, little is known on this touchy subject.
The truth is that EFI is set up for petrol 14.7:1 A/F ratio, when you blend in an alcohol Ethanol (9.5:1) you end up using more fuel and have response/driveability issues.

Injectors clog up, bad spray patterns, flow differences between cylinders etc from the crap fuel we have now.

Carbon buildup in the inlet tract and combustion chamber acts as a sponge and absorbs fuel as it enters the combustion chamber and gives similar symptoms, hence the "need" to decarbon with either Subaru upper engine cleaner or some other products out there, like three bond I use at work, great product.

I've had customers cars with horrible flat spots especially cold, and after all other avenues are exhausted, data display shows fuel trims constantly trying to go full rich to make up for bad flowing injectors.

Ive just put 2 tanks of E-95 (10% Ethanol, 95 Octane) through my EA82T and cant notice a difference between it and normal 95 Unleaded. At 10c/L cheaper than normal 95.

Yeah I did the E10 recently however then had to remove the water from the tank after I kind of stopped on Majura Road here in the ACT(not a nice thing to have happen at 11pm at night!!!)

Had salvaged enough to get me home but will never use it again(probably not the fuels fault, moreso the service station!!)

As for the surging - I am off to Subaru in Fyshwich to grab 2 tins of the foam and see how I go...I think this may fix the problem as I pulled the plenum pipe off and it was very very cruddy on the inside.

Just one more - I last inserted the foam into the pipe just in front of the MPFI Plenum(its a small hose - not a big one)or should I remove the air box and squirt it down there instead. The former method is easier and really doesnt need too much prep.

Standby for smoke!!

Take the plenum off the top of the throttle body and disconnect the AFM. (disconnecting the Air Flow Meter will make the ECU ignore that fact that there is no air flowing through it)

Start the car and add the treatment while it is running.

Well I left before I saw your reply however I did the next pest thing and took off the hose that sits between the AFM and the plenum. I had some advice from the dealer at Phillip(ex Mini type) and worked a treat.

The next issue is now the car is idling a wee bit high so I am going to have to reset the ECU and adjust the timing yet again. I also filled up with Vortex so will see how it goes.

Initial indications are that it is running much better and no surging:-Dand it is running very very smoothly now. The idle is around 1100rpm however on first start-up, went to nearly 2100rpm for over 1 minute this morning. It settled down after a couple of minutes though and it is very very responsive now. Got a grin from ear to ear now and it is fun to drive again:-D

Thanks for all the advice - I am dumping another can in there on the week-end at the suggestion of Subaru in Phillip and will use Suparoo's method this time.

As for idling, its quite normal for it to idle up to 2000rpm when it is cold, but should drop back to 7-800rpm after about 5 minutes.

To adjust your idle, there is a grub screw on the throttle body for this. It is located on the left side of the 'Idle-up Solenoid' (the hexagonal barrel with 2 wires coming from the top) looking from the top.

My subaru hesitates in acceleration, specially cold. It has a carb, i just thought it was something worn in the mechanism. You guys think cleaner through the carb can fix that?

Also it acts badly when it rains, even though i haven't moved it untill after the rain. Sometimes stalls even.
