2WD Liberty auto problems. Please help.

Post by har952 » Thu Feb 02, 2006 10:11 pm

Havent visited in a while, good new forum layout.

Heres the prob. 1991 2wd liberty auto with no forward gears, reverse works fine.

When I first bought the car the auto did the exact same thing in traffic one day the thing lost all forward gears, towed the car home, the next day the problem was gone, serviced the auto and no problems since.

Today same thing lost all forward gears, reversed down to the auto shop, and left the car to be looked at on tuesday. Automatic shop to me means lots of $$$.

I tried the manual switch tried running it through all the gears and nothing, no slipping noise, howeaver with the manual switch on, the auto makes a very slight clunk, like it does when selecting a gear, this only happens in 2nd, tried slight reving and selecting a gear, nothing, tried high reving and raming it in all forward gears and nothing.

When i bought the car the auto had been rebuilt 5,000kms prior, which was 5 years. I have owned the car for 9 months and have clocked up another 20,000.

One thing the car has never done is provide engine breaking in any gear other than 4th, that is you can select 1st, 2nd, 3rd and hold it in that gear excelerate away, when you take your foot off the throtle the engine goes straight back to idle and the car coasts allong like you are in neutral, bring the revs back up to the where they should be if things were normal and it catches and away you go again.

Because i have never towed with the car and live 1000kms away from any ice and always just leave it in d this have never concerned me, but im thinking that when rebuilt the auto has never been right and has been waiting to give up for good.

Any ideas on this problem?, or any working reasonable priced 2wd auto boxes for sale near the gold coast?

Thanks Clint..

I cannot help you with Automatics as I don't work around with Autos - Always had manuals. But If i were you, I'll ask that question on http://www.rslibertyclub.org as they're more focused on Liberty series, I am sure someone there can help you... But I am so sure someone here will be able to tell you an answer..

Cheers
