EA82 - Rough running when cold

Post by indy » Thu Apr 03, 2008 7:42 pm

Hey all, i have a 1988 Subaru L series EA82, when the engine is cold and i start it up, it usually fails to kick over straight away and i need to give the accelerator a few kicks while turning the key to get it to kick over.
then it will idle/run very rough until it warms up.
any suggestions, does it sound like i have a cracked head? or could it be hopefully something smaller?
cheers.

if its a carby it may only need a simple tuneup by a mechanic.

eg. timing, mixture, idle speed adjustments etc

Have a similar prob w/ my carby '92L, check the handbook, it recommends that when cold starting, depress the clutch slightly and let off (assuming its a man) then tap the acceleraterix once, again slightly, then off, turn key and robert should be your fathers brother.

and on the tuning note, can only help getting a tune - my subie mech told me there is a screw to adjust the fuel mixture "but you have to butcher the carby to get at it" (his words) - sounds a little extreme to me? thoughts anyone?

also basic, but check you've got the right spark plugs and gap(s), b/c i know i don't at the mo and thats what me thinks is causing my probs.

hey all thanks for the replies, yeah its a carby sorry forgot to mention that one!
i'll have to try that tommorrow morning when i start it up thanks L-BJ!
and my cousin is doing the timing for me on the w.e so i'll get him to have a look at the idle and mixture and see if they need adjusting.
thanks for the help, hopefully its just a simple little thing and nothing major.

also is there anyway to tell whether a motor has a cracked head, i have a compression tester but havent used it yet as im a bit unsure of how to properly test it and wether it actually detects if theres a cracked head?

cheers.
