Water + Oil, eewww. EA81.

My little runabout decided to start stalling at lights today, so I took it home and let it cool down to work on it. I've just popped the aircleaner off and it's full of delicious cream. Oil and water mixed, not good.

I pulled off the hose between the air cleaner and RH rocker cover, it now appears the rocker cover is full of water. The car has been using a bit of coolant, but I figured this to be because of the stock overflow pipe.

I'm about to go out there and pop the rocker covers off, see if I can drain this water out, but can anyone give me an idea of where the water & oil are mixing? Is it a common EA81 fault?

Oh, and EA82's are still worse. This motor still drives.

Scratch that, pulling it further apart has revealed a rather poor diagnosis: this engine is cactus.

Still drives though... :P

Sounds like time for another EJ conversion or you could go backwards, be different, do an EK42 conversion, it'd go like a slug but the fuel economy would be unreal

I'll even donate an EK42 and 4 speed box to the cause :P

LOL Justin. I'd consider it if I had the money. Problem is, at the moment I have no money at all. Plus this car is meant to stop me from spending money.

You have made me think about it though....

Oh - and Jordan, I doubt it'd be more economical because I'd end up bolting some stupid amount of boost to it to get it to move, and I'd end up with conrods flying every which way.

Check the manifold gasket. I've had water in RHS rocker cover three times on EA81's each time due to RHS manifold gasket.

The bolts holding the manifold on seem to shake loose and then you get water in the manifold when the engine gets warm

If is wasnt for reading this topic, I might have had a similar prob myself. Looked under the bonnet yesterday and sure enough, oil had started to make its way up and out of the rear RHS manifold bolt. Had to retighten that side a fair bit. Thanks for the tip Subgiraffe!

Yeah it's a little to far for me to pick up, smoov, but nicely spotted.

I'm going to have the reco done on this motor, remember I have 4 other EA81's around the place so if something's iffy on this motor I should be OK.
I'm calling in a favour from an old customer of mine, should see the car back on the road with the engine reco'd and new CV's for a tad over a grand.
I'm going to have it done mid-January, should be interesting as thats exactly when I'm changing jobs....

Chemiweld might buy you a little time , just empty radiator and fill with water, warm up, enter chemiweld , idle some more and take for a drive, it worked on my MY and I had no more whip cream.

Chemiweld will make it near impossible to remove the cylinder heads. Seeing as I want to reco this motor I think I'll stay away from the stuff.

hmmm chemiweld .... my ea82 is going again thanks to that stuff.. although it still seems to be using coolant... as far as i can tell its not leaking anywhere though. Any ideas as to where it could be using it? (car is running really well since i changed timing belts so i have my suspicions they may not have been on right before)

Are both caps secure? I am assuming that you are not smelling coolant, correct?

yeah both caps are secure. Heater core isnt leaking. have inspected engine running (hot and cold) cant find any leaks. But given about 100k's of driving and then cooling down and the overflow bottle will be empty and the radiator will be lowish (where you can just see the top row sticking up above the coolant).
