brennyv: im not sure about the ej22's, but with the turbos the thermostat housing gasket is located on the thermostat itself, so i just grinded away at the the 2 arms holding the spring and the whole assembly pops out. i dont intend to leave it like that it was just a test to see if i had flow.

I have good reason to believe its my gauge because im using 1 of those 52mm aftermarket ones on the original rs liberty sender. Yesterday i bought a radiator cap that tells u the temperature of the water, and when the cap said the water was 60 degrees, the gauge in the cabin was off the scale past hot. No steam coming from anywhere and the engine felt cool. The radiator felt like it was at about 60 degrees and the bottom hose was just slightly cooler than the top.

That probably explains why my fans arent coming on, ive never let the engine get to proper operating temp before i shut if off in fear of seizing it.

Mine is the same as Adam's. The thermostat itself has the rubber gasket around it's outer edge. The housing presses against it to seal. We aren't imagining it.

Latest developments:

The engine was never overheating at all, in fact it wasnt even reaching 60 degrees by the time i turned it off because the other gauge was reading off the scale. I left it to get to operating temperature and voila, the thermos started working, and within 30 seconds, they turned off again.

Cooling system works perfectly now. It wont be long till she's up and running now, just got to bolt the dash back up and get an exhaust made and she'll be ready for her first offroad trip with the ej.:D Cheers for all the help, and a lesson learned, always use the gauge that comes with the sender.
