center diff locked

The auto box in the Liberty has got the drive to the rear wheels permently engaged and going round tight corners the rear inside wheel is chirping, can anyone shed some light on a remedy for this as to what has gone wrong and how to rectify it .

the duty C solenoid that controls rear drive is probably stuffed. If its not that then you have a wiring problem between the TCU and the gearbox, or the TCU itself has died.

The gearbox is mechanically locked, and by applying voltage to the solenoid the rear drive can be reduced. 12V on the solenoid results in full FWD

I recommend you fix it sooner rather than later or you will burn out the clutch packs driving it on the road like that. Sounds like they are in good nick if its chirping, jsut what you want for offroading (the clutch packs have a habit of burning out resulting in poor rear drive offroad)

sounds like an intermittent electrical fault...

there should be an empty fuse box in the engine bay (against the firewall on the left i think) labelled FWD. This if you put a fuse in here it will go back to full FWD. Should stop it from happening till you find the real problem, and you may be able to trace the wires from this to the solenoid.

It could fix it if the solenoid was working properly. but if the box cant do AWD properly, its not going to be able to do FWD either...

the wires from this fuse are an input to the TCU - they dont lead back to the gearbox

That means you have a fault code.
1 Ign off move to drive/4, manual button on
2 Ign on move to 3 manual off
3 Move to 2 manual on
4 Move to 1 manual off
5 Depress throttle 1/2 way and then foot off.
I hope thats right because the book is at work, the power light should now flash up the code. Slow for tens, faster for ones
I can check my book on Monday and fax information.
