brumby gets the shudders

Post by mullet » Wed Jul 25, 2007 9:21 pm

Well it might be the wet weather we are having at the moment but here is the symtom .Driving to work in the wet conditions if i go to overtake a truck between 110 and 120 klm phr the old girl starts to miss and gets a kind of violent shake in the engine .I just have to back of . Can site on 100 to 110 no problem its just when i boot it to pass a truck ? So far i have replaced plugs , plug leads , battery [ went dead ] oil , oil filter , fuel filter , air filter . On the way home today it was dry so i tried to replecate the same thing but it wouldnt quite do it , there was a hint though . 92 brumby 240000klm stock ea81 with webber carb . Any ideas would be a great help.

PS i am thinking she might be sucking in to moist air stuffing the mixture up ?

Ok so i have found the problem for those that want to know . I didnt know that there was another fuel filter under the tray befor the fuel pump . I changed it out and problem solved . I cut it open to check it out .Totally clogged , may even say it was the original filter .

we should have that second fuel filter listing in bright flashing lights somewhere... i reckon it's probably something that stumps a lot of people - took me over a month to work out that was the problem with my car at the time.

Same result - replaced it and had a look, so bad it looked like it could have been original.

do L series have 2x fuel filters? because i have a similar problem. when i boot it-full throttle- no matter the speed it misses and jerks around. i replaced my engine bay fuela filter a couple months ago so i dont think its that.

maybe i need bigger fuel pump?

VLturbo pump would be way overkill for your motor matt...
My EJ20turbo at WOT doesn't missfire - still running the standard N/A MPFI fuel pump that came in the car.
I guess it couldn't hurt to have one anyways.
It's probably likely your car was originally a carby model, who knows maybe you are still running the carby fuel pump! You can tell by looking at it, if its a square box its the carby one. If its a cylinder kindof the same size as those trendy new small coke cans then its the MPFI one. You probably remember what Alex's VL turbo one looks like actually - the mpfi one looks the same externally.
But yeah, there is probably another filter down near the pump, best to renew that too.

Its funny I just went into the local autopro and when i asked for a fuel filter they asked which one I bought the car cheap too cause of no power but got about 30% just from the filters, also doesn't matter if fuel pumps are over done cause the fuel preasure regulator takes care of the excess.
