some things are fair, some things are silly and not needed.
fog light globe $25.
im not sure about it all to be honest. Clutch and gaskets are semi fair enough, but if youre spending 5k on a service id expect the head gaskets to be done, as well as a full bearing kit for the front of the engine, not just a timing belt and tensioner.
Head gasket is soemthing that is pretty likely to let go in such an old (performance) car and will cost thousands for a mechanic to re-do.

Yep fully agree with Alex. Like said by others, I'm sure you will be happy with the outcome. It is pricey but they should to be a very professional outfit and will likely do a great job. If you have the money and see it as a good investment go for it.Alex wrote:...spending 5k on a service id expect the head gaskets to be done, as well as a full bearing kit for the front of the engine, not just a timing belt and tensioner...
Many of us here are mechanically minded and that king of money buys cars and parts. But for you this may very well be money well spent.
But see if they will do the HeadGaskets and full tensioner kit like Alex said above, if they have the engine out and the inlet off to do hoses etc its only about $300 more in parts (or less genuine).
Its your car, your money and your call. Do whats best for you!

I haven't posted for a while but think I need to on this one. Looking at those prices the place is a dead set rip off.
$780 for bench work? Again, WTF? Especially since they aren't even removing the heads.
WTF number 3 can they be spending $520 on for a service? Full RRP on spark plugs is around $25 each. $100 for oil and filter - even then that is expensive. $15 for some coolant and the same for some pwr str fluid brings it out to about $250
Mate, for 5k they should be doing a complete overhaul on your engine. My advice would be to stay away. This sounds very much like the businesses you see on Today Tonight.
I haven't read past this so far. $690+ to remove and refit the engine??? WTF? At $100 an hour it is still nearly 7 hours work according to them. My back is screwed and I work on a dirt floor workshop with out a hoist. I can still take a motor out and refit in 3 hours or less on my own.Engine removal and Refit $690 + GST
Bench Work $780 + GST
Materials to fit the engine such as Engine oil, oil filter, Sparkplugs, Coolant and complete the major service $520 + GST

Got the car back today. Running very well. Bill came to 6k! Ow.
I had a look at the photos taken during the repair. She was a real mess. Looking much better now. All Drive Subaroo are very expensive, but the work is of a good standard. Very happy with the result. The head gaskets were not done. They said it could have opened up a can of worms. The engine felt strong and looking at the condition of the motor when clean with the rocker covers off, they it was not nessasery little annoyed they were not replaced for the amount I paid. Otherwise a good job. Thanks Aunty Julia.
I'll post up the final break down in a few days.

Ummm... Wow. I know I wouldn't have pursued that quoted price. Sorry to say, but I'm with Outback Bloke with this one!
You could have two RS turbos now with the cost of that. Yes you wouldn't have the service done but you'd have two...
I'd be going back and complaining about the head gaskets not being done in that service when you wanted them done! Can of worms - they were simply avoiding the work!
Even better, you could have had the engine rebuilt for that price!
Cheers
Bennie

2 x RS Libs with 300,000km on the clock BOTH needing five grand spent on them!
I found out a decent fella I know sold his RS sedan for two grand I wished he'd let me know, but the next owner had a gripe after a while. Seems that so many things went wrong with it soon after, needing heep$ $pent on it.
It is each to their own and Ken has done what he felt right .....

I am glad that he is very happy with the end result. The fella came to us asking advice on what it should cost and we tried to tell him. It is simply amazing how much they charged. "Gob-smacking knock you down" amazing how much they charged.
