help starting ej22

ok well i've swapped every thing out of my wagon into my sedan. rewired it the same as my wagon but the starter won't play nice.

the sedan was a 1.8t efi, with electric auto 4wd. so i figure with it being a auto after removing the box, the starter is ecu controlled (starting only in P and N) meaning the car doesn't know what gear its in and wont start.

anyone have any ideas?,
how is the starter activated i.e. earth throwen to the starter to kick it in to life?
how to wire up a starter independent to the cars current wiring?
