Losing Coolant EJ22
Losing Coolant EJ22
I'm losing coolant can not seem to find where. If the water pump is leaking, where does the coolant usually end up draining away?
If inside heater core, where does it usually drain away?

Heater core you should have wet carpet and a noticeable smell of coolant inside the car.
Water pump it may be leaking out the timing covers and evaporating on the hot exhaust headers.
I would suggest running the car up to full temperature then going over it with a torch and checking everywhere for a leak.
Also, it's possible you have done a head gasket and coolant is leaking into the cylinders, is there are smoke or vapor coming out the exhaust?

I also had a similar problem in my liberty and found it to be a mega airlock in the system that was causing it to push it out of the overflow and I Neva really noticed till I ran it up and checked for a airlock. I would suggest flushing the heater core also then slowing working coolant back into the system and be 100% you dont have a airlock.

Sorry to hijack but ive the same problem, loosing small amounts of coolant and no visible leaks. I did burst a heater hose a few weeks ago, so hopefully it's an airlock.
I reluctantly did check the oil and was happy to see it was still a golden black. But now after andrewt's responce im a bit worried again, I have noticed a bit of vapor from the exhaust, but it is near freezing this time of year in vic.
Is it a constant vapor to look out for? or does it go away like the normal cold start vapors after warming up?
And bennyv how'd you remove the airlock? I made sure I filled the radiator with the car facing up hill, and I park facing up hill to is that enough?
Cheers.

I started by jacking up the front end slightly, then I removed the outlet hose from he heater core and started the engine wile poring in the coolant till it came out from the heater core then secured it again (wile engine was running) then let the system fill and get upto temp (with the cap off)daveosubi wrote:

take to a workshop and get them to Pressure Test the system.
also make sure your Rad cap is good
If airlock in heatercore youd normally get a Gurgling/sucking kinda noise when at higher revs and load
edit - Headgaskets can go in many ways. sometimes not affecting engine performance at all

mate had an EJ25 in shop few weeks ago. Customer had complained of a stumble on idle that disappeared on driving, then on a highway trip after successfully doing 450 km. it had gone to HOT on gauge. Car stopped and towed in. Pressure test of system showed nothing at cold temp. Heads off revealed head gasket gone only slightly. Different sort of gasket, metal with thin gasket 'paper' each side. Headman says it is common. There is not much between bore and water jacket on the deck.

What is great about this forum, every one offers an opinion, not are all right not are all wrong, but there is always something there to help. Make sense?
El Freddo, you offered this advice in the thread L-series Cooling System Help
I thought it was a wacky idea at the time but had nothing to lose by trying it. By other posts it seems to be something that happens occassionally once air gets into the system. The radiator shop I got the pressure test done told me libertys + camrys can be a bugger to completely bleed, his suggestion raise front of vehicle hoses off and flush thru with town water from hose, defeats the purpose of coolant, but he sells + fixes corroded radiators.
