idle, making me sound dumb
idle, making me sound dumb
hey guys
this is making me feel like abit of a noob but i cant adjust the idle on my ej22.
it was idling high before, and now that i swapped throttle bodies its gone even higher.- 1500rpm.
ive tried the idel screw but that aint doing jack. i also noticed that if you twist the tps that the idle goes up further but obviously wont go down.
any other hints or ideas that could be making it go so high?

You do know that the top visable screw is pretty much a fake adjustment and the true throttle adjustment is actually under the throttle linkage?
Also the Air Bypass Control Valve that Captain Obvious suggested is a ECU controlled Idle adjustment and the actual throttle adjusters should never be used to increase the idle. The throttle adjusters are just there so the throttle doesn't stick shut by closing the butterlfly too tight.
If the IABC is at fault though you should be getting a code.
Could also be an air leake between your throttle body and manifold. I would imagine if it was an air leake before the throttle body then the IABC would be able to compensate. Coule be a minfold to Engine leake too.
Could also be the Trottle Position sensor is not adjusted correctly. This is on the throttle body and is extreamily sensitive to adjust. If you changed this from one Throttle body to the other then there is a very high chance the adjustment is out. Gregories Lib manual covers how to adjust it correctly.
Also after every main part swap on an EJ engine i have found that reseting the ECU is a good idea. Im not sure if there is a fast way of doing it... everyone says something different but i simply unplug the ECU or take my battery off for the night. In the morning it should idle high until the motor is warm and then hunt and auto adjust your idle. Thats if nothing it adjusted wrong or faulty.
I hope this helps some. Unfortunately there is a lot it could be at this stage.

ive noticed its like a cold idle(higher obviously) but it doesnt drop back down to normal idle after it warms up...could this be something?
also matt said he's never seen it do the higher cold idle thing and then drop back down to normal idle rpm.
just another idea.

Perhaps a wiring problem and the Start wire is remaining on... hence tweak timing and raising the RPM. Just an idea... would also throw a code though.
Does your ECU have the little hole in the side with an engine light in there... half of them seam to have this.

no no hole in the side of ecu.
It is the ecu doing it all tho because:
i was seeing if i could get the CEL working and plugged in both test connectors- resetting the codes. then the next time i started it up was working like a dream- thermos didnt come on automatically, rpm went down to 7-800rpm and was hunting for the ide a bit too. but then the next time i started it up it, it reverted back to the way it was.
