Clutch slipping or not?

Post by xii » Sun Sep 14, 2008 5:33 pm

Hi guys, thought i'd post this up for some advice.

I have a 92 L wagon and it was fine until I stopped at a set of traffic lights a few hours ago. When the lights turned green and i let off the clutch with some gas as usual, I couldnt get any bite on the clutch at all. The gearbox gives a fast rattling/knocking sound like some metal thing hitting a propeller constantly when I rev the engine and let my foot off the clutch pedal. This was in front wheel drive mode and was about to call a tow truck when I decided to try 4WD. Theoretically I didnt expect it to work but it did! Clutch bites and the car moves as per normal in 4WD mode.

Now im not an expert but isnt the rear wheel drive behind the clutch as well? My rear wheels shouldnt be moving the car if it was a worn clutch slipping right?

Secondly, symptoms of a worn clutch should have been gradual and noticable instead of being so sudden? I also suppose a slipping clutch should sound more like a grinding noise instead of knocking.

Would appreciate any advice on this. Thanks!

Cheers
Calvin

Certainly sounds like it could be a cv , strange that it would go without warning though.

Hmmm thanks for the replies. I doubt its the CV as i put in reconed ones not long ago. Ill check today anyway. Could it be the transfer case or front diff?

Also, There is no noise in 4wd mode. If it was CV, should the noise continue in 4wd mode? Thanks

Wouldnt be the transfer gears if you have drive in 4WD which are at the rear of the box. Could be the front diff but would be unusual. Still even with recoed CV's they would still be worth a check. Could also be the high/low gears out of adjustment too.

When i did a front inner there wasn't much warning, just let go, no clicking only a slight rumbling noise a little before it gave way...

I think you can stop worrying about the clutch anyway- no clutch = no go in 2wd or 4wd.
Pardon my ignorance please, but if it was a front cv or any thing to do with a front driveshaft, why would it not make the same noise in 4wd as it does in 2wd? They are still turning arent they?

put your car in low-range 4wd. Pull up the handbrake and do a big massive skid! lol

your cv shaft has broken. GUARANTEED!

because in fwd its trying to drive the front wheels.....slippery diff means drive goes to blown joint = noise

in 4wd front and rear split is the same so the rear drives the car and the front wheels turn as well the same speed as the CV, last time i blew a cv i didnt hear it, unless in 2wd

but again..i could be worng..might not be a cv at all:P...may be blown front diff...but i doubt that

Center diff cage thing in gear box.
Probably cheaper to source another gearbox
