funny temp gauge issues

Post by Alex » Mon Aug 11, 2008 9:16 pm

hey all.

ive noticed this before with the old EJ22 but its got alot worse with the new turbo motor.

when i depress the CLUTCH the temp gauge moves about 1/4 of its range. The car sits on a constant 1/4 temp, but when im sitting at the stop lights etc it jumps up to 1/2 - 2/3rd temp. If i then take it out of gear and put it into neutral it goes back down to 1/4 temp. It also moves slightly when i accelerate.

I have checked the whole clutch setup to see if any wiring has been interrupted but there's nothing obvious to me.

has anyone seen this before? any ideas? its got me stumped! going to hook up an after market temp gauge asap but id still like the stock temp gauge to read accurately.

thanks heaps!

What sensor are you using to run the temp gauge.L or ej?I had a similar thing when using the l sensor mounted in the top hose ,it was a bad earth to the sensor.

sorry to hijack but are the L and EJ temp senders the same thread size? could make the gauge work more accurately.

maybe something to do with the netural position switch wire?

I know the MY and EJ are not the same Matt. Not sure about L. I would guess not.

no they are different. You can tap out the ej manifold for the l sensor[larger thread] but it wouldn't be a bad idea to add some more ally around the area of the sensor.

Have you tried running extra earth straps from the engine to the battery and the body.

It sounds like it could be a bad earth, particularly if you have been having electrical problems in the past

Also, few things to check:

Do you have a blocked heater core? Does the heater work properly? Has it been bled properly? Make sure the water can circulate through the heater core as this will cause the car to overheat.
Is it actually getting hot? Or just saying it on the gauge - grab the radiator or something like that.

If you read the entire thread (specially the last few posts) You would have seen that they have fixed the problem and it was a bad earth.
