Hey , no idea who to ask on this one so thought id give this a go to all the subaru fans . Ok i have a twin turbo wrx motor ( dnt ask me anything about the motor im a chic i know its a t/turbo an a rex motor n thats all haha ) and it was supposed to go in my little impreza Lx but its only 1.6 and front wheel drive so i haven't done anything with it , so i had an idea the other day if i sold the impreza and brought a subaru outback i think they are about a 2.5 i think so shoul d be better suited for the twin turbo's ..but i got no idea can the outback handle it will the motor fit and all that ?? and can it all be done without permits ??

Just a note on the motor - Being a twin turbo motor it wouldn't have come from a WRX as they only come with single turbos. It would most likely be an import motor from a twin turbo Legacy (Liberty). That being said, it's based on an EJ20 block which is what WRX's have anyways!

It would be a little easier to get it set up in an Outback because they are already AWD - they already have all the rear wheel drive components (hubs, diff mountings etc).

However there's nothing to stop you bolting in WRX rear end components into your front wheel drive Imprezza - not much of a drama at all really.

That's the only real difference in the scheme of things. With either vehicle you are looking at a pretty involved conversion, lots of wiring to sort out etc. Not a weekend job put it that way.

This is assuming you are also converting to a proper turbo AWD gearbox to match the twin turbo motor. It's not a great idea to bolt the turbo motor to the Outback AWD gearbox as it's not designed for the power, and it's a rediculous idea to bolt it to the Impreza fwd gearbox!


Anything can be done without permits if you aren't worried about little things like the law...but yeah otherwise either way you really need to get and engineering certification and take the car over the licensing pits after a conversion like this.

should still fit in the impreza as far as i know, it'l still be a tight squeeze in any car tho- even the B4 liberty it comes from. you can do it without permits/engineering but id say it would be a good idea to for insurance reasons.
