on the way home last night ( i temporarily welded and braced etc etc) the welds tore off the car again, and its now no longer driveable. R.I.P.

Why not do a body swap? Sounds like you've put some good time, effort and parts in this baby and now your just going to wreck it. I don't mean this in a harsh way, i know it can seem hopeless and depressing at times but i know from experience that you'll miss this car when its gone...
Some one may have a shell sitting there - I'm with Andrew T on looking to another shell even if its got a little (repairable) damage...
Hope something positive comes from this - i can already see the subi community coming together over there about this...
