Hanging out with the qld crew in the high country :D

G'day all,

I'm not sure how many knew that I was planning to meet up with the qld crew that are touring the high country in vic around the Hotham/Dargo area.

Sunday I met Yarney, Dazza, Subi wan kenobi, Dave, Mary, Mick, Danny and his wife Beth. I also met Bob but I didn't catch him later in the week as I needed to head to Benders to catch up with my sister and then see Florence and the Machine live in concert at Rod Laver (Totally awesome!). So I organised to catch up with the crew Monday night on my return but this didn't happen until Tuesday morning - it all worked out well in the end.

Enough of the reading, now the looking which is always the best part!

Dargo Road at the Blue Rag Tk turn off:

Ruby Scoo and Subi Wan Kenobi's ride on Blue Rag:

The hill climb in the back ground was too steep and rutted to traverse so we turned around from here and headed back to Basalt Knob Tk North:

Image

Yarney's foz:

Image

Mick's foz on Blue Rag Tk - well, the front of it anyway:

Image

I think this is Dazza's foz in the burnt snow gums on Blue Rag Tk:

Image

Subi Wan, it doesn't look that steep but it was a good bit of fun:

Mary's foz with a "battle wound" in the old snow gums:

Basalt Knob Tk South:

Ruby Scoo is sitting horizontally in this pic, I've walk up the track about 10m and stepped aside for the pic, I hope this shows you the steepness of this area:

Image

Dazza waiting on the slope for others ahead to pass the difficult section, Ruby Scoo horizontal again:

Image

And if that doesn't show you how steep it was in this section hopefully these will. Subi Wan:

Good times!

At the bottom of the track, the old Talbotville township that is now a grassy camping ground:

Image

^ The hill with the pointed top is where we've come down from, there's more behind that too...

On to Dargo to re-fuel:

Image

Regular & Diesel: $169.9; Premium: something near $179.9 I think.

Dargo Hotel:

We camped on the Dargo river along the Upper Dargo Road.

The next day we headed up Ewen Spur Track then crossed over to a couple of other tracks to end up at the top end of Upper Dargo Rd at Harrison's Cut:

Image

This was cut to divert the river to allow miners to dig the gold out of the river bend.

Image

I couldn't help myself:

Image

On the upper Dargo Rd beside the Dargo river:

Image

This track was a pile of fun, not because of the name:

Image

Stopped on Murdering Spur Tk for a snack:

Image

Start of the descent:

Image

At the bottom after about 4 river crossings we came to this beauty, the deepest we had a go at while I was with the group. I think this was Dave's Tk but not 100% on that:

"Tail end" Dave doing the same crossing:

The Dog's Grave, buried here by his master in c1863:

From here I was looking forward to more 4wd'n after lunch, but my back seriously locked up (still is :() so I called it a day once I came across the Dinner Plain Tk and traversed that on my own. The top end north of Victoria Falls Tk is good fun.

I'd like to say a big thanks to Yarney to the opportunity to meet up and join the group for a stint. I had a great time and I'm very happy with Ruby Scoo too. I wish I didn't cut it short but unfortunately it would have been a silly move on my part to continue.

To the vic boys drooling, I've got some plans in the making - I'll talk to you more about that on the Mt Cole trip ;)

This is what Mt Hotham looked like upon my return:

Cheers

Bennie

PS: Mary, I told you I was a good driver!

Great meeting you Bennie had a blast and would love to explore more of the area with a better turbo and 3500 rpm stall. I was using fuel at an average of 25l/100 on the dirt and the rd trip back is using 12/100. We are in a cabin in Coona with one day to go and down to 5 cars in convoy. Btw still love the EA

Yeah it was, I'm super keen to check out this snorkel of yours to see if it will fit an L series.
nachaluva wrote:Looks like you had great weather. Sounds like you all had an awesome time!
Yeah it was awesome weather, we even managed 13 degrees (very warm!) at camp tuesday night, but the tuesday morning was freezing up on Blue Rag!
nachaluva wrote:But what happened to Mary's Foz? Did that happen on the trip?
I'll let Mary or SWK spill on that one. It happened on the trip.
rubisubi wrote:Awesome pics and write up dude well done. Mary's whack looks like a good one? What happened? This is one of those trips where I'll look back and think why didn't i go
I'm sure we could organise something down the track ;)

Yeah as I've said it was great to meet you all too! You'll be glad you left when you did, this is how I had to start Ruby Scoo this morning on Higgi Drive:

Kez drove us home in the snow! First time for her driving in the snow, did very well. It's still puking down :D :D

Yarney and crew will be glad to hear that I've seen a chiropractor today in Lakes Entrance. I'm still not straightened out but I'm now no longer in the same level of pain that I was yesterday or when I left the trip :D I'd need a few more visits to get things back to where they should be.
guyph_01 wrote:wow thats really cool. We don't have that kind of terrain here in WA.
I thought we'd "told" you that! :p
vincentvega wrote:when did princess' lib grow a bullbar?
I think it was the week before he left for this trip ;) Nice looking bar too.

Thank you all for your comments about the photos, you know I try to keep them of top quality to share with you all.

Cheers
