I think it's a bit early for "definite". June 2010 is still over a year away. There's a whole lot that can happen and change people's plans between here and there.

As for "interested and prepared to begin planning" - you can count me in under those rules.

Some details
  • I live in Western Sydney
  • I can meet anywhere between here and there
  • I have a standard MY99 Outback that I would like to use for the trip with as minimal modifications as possible - and I would really prefer them to be temporary and removable afterwards.
  • I am not really interested in roads that are not suitable for my vehicle. I have no real need to test its ability. But I am not afraid to get it dirty.
  • I am very keen to be involved.
I have subscribed to this thread so I can stay in touch with it.
Dave Hill

MY13 Outback - The new blue one.
MY99 Outback - As it's maker intended - but with a fresher engine now.
1994 RS Turbo - Not quite so stock! And freshly repainted now :)
And then there's the family Vortex - rebuilt, updated and now unregistered and gathering dust in the shed.

Nolans Brook...

How you guys planning on getting through 1-1.2 METRES of water? That is over the bonnet on Patrols, Cruisers etc, no standard Outback is getting through that unscathed...

If CREB is shut, take the coast road, nearly as fun but without the gate...

just something for consideration...

Oh yeah, RACQ Ultracare would be a VERY good idea, and also a spare set of shocks as the vehicle weight goes through them, I've broken L rears you can too!

The creb track has apparently been shut for years now, even when i went through it 2 years ago..... There is not deep crossing you have to go through, except on the Creb track, however i wouldn't be taking the Outback down there anyway as it would be hard slow going. I am hopefully going to go up the creb track in the next month or so my DRZ.... :-) This is of course if you do it in the dry and not the wet. I am keen but i can't confirm i can until closer due to work...

Yes there is, i saw a Standard Wicked Camper up driving up to the top.... 2 wheel drive! You just need to prep the L Series right.

for anyone considering the trip I found an excellent series of videos on youtube that show the conditions of the road really well.

Search for "Capr York Action Chap" on youtube. There are about 12 videos all up. Really good watching!

This may be a bit early yet.

I still have a plan to join in this trip, but I really want to know what the grand plan for side trips and such is.

I need to take some time off work for this and I need to plan that too. I have already pre-empted about 5 weeks off and it would be my guess that around 2 week of this would be in the Cape.

I am not really concerned about being able to drive my stocker Outback up the main road - if a Wicked camper will do it the OB will - but am interested in which of the other roads up there it will and will not handle. I am planning to go to Normanton either on the way back or way up there to ride the Gulflander and I have a visit to both Winton and Longreach in the book as well. Obviously some 'touristy' trips around Cairns are a given too - the Kuranda railway and Skyway for one. Are we planning on driving up (or back) via Cooktown and Cape Tribulation?

I have around 8,000km as a guesstimate from Sydney and back.

My accomodation plan is a tent - takes about 15 mins up and probably 20-25 to pack it down again. Any experienced campers? will this work "up there"?

I have been watching those youtube vids but some of them are a bit daunting - particularly Gunshot Creek!!

Can anybody give me any clues?

good find Jan. Thats exactly hte sort of info I have been looking for.

some creeks are just not an option for us (Nolans Brook for example) but you just do the sections of the OTL that are possible and bypass the rest

I couldn't drive all those thousands of kilometers there and back on the road knowing i'd bypassed all of that.

you dont bypass all of it, just the ones that are too deep for a suby.

what would you do daza? Sink your car?

There is more to the cape than just the OTL

Dane, I was under the impression that Nolan's was not bypassable if you are on the OTL, gunshot yes, Nolan's no.
