Fiori points Dizzy conversion

Post by TOONGA » Mon Mar 15, 2021 7:12 pm

this is to convert a 4 cylinder Fiori points dizzy to an electronic ignition dizzy.
This is way cheaper than trying to import a sambar electronic dizzy from Japan.
it is also a great way to make an Electronic dizzy for an EJ carby Engine.

make sure you have 2 separate containers for the parts of each dizzy

Open up the points dizzy and remove the rotor button and dust cap, unscrew the rotor arm (leave in place for now) and remove the circlip from the vacuum advance then unscrew the vacuum advance module and remove it. Then undo the screws either side of the points plate. Unscrew the screw that holds the external electric wiring in place at this point you should be able to use the rotor arm to remove the points plate. do not force the plate as it has a bearing race that will explode if forced ( I have no pictures of the whole process as I was experimenting when I did this)

this is the model barina dizzy you will need it must have vacuum advance and of course the electronic internals

the procedure for removing the parts is mostly identical to the points dizzy but take care with the igniter and pick up as they don't like being dropped.
Image

this is what the two plates look like side by side, the only part you can not see is the heat sink for the igniter as it was on another part of the bench. I removed the external wiring to make it easier to mount everything into the Fiori dizzy

the barina igniter, pick up and stator in place

I found the hardest part of this conversion was getting the body screws and the stator undone, even with the dizzy held in a vice with soft face protection for the shaft of the dizzy.

I hope this helps someone

Awesome info Toonga - it’s great to see these sorts of thrills going on to keep the older/rarer ones alive and well!

I’ll add in “barina distributor hack” for anyone that may be doing a web wide search ;)

Keep up the good work!

Cheers

Thanks Bennie hopefully this will solve the EJ dizzy problem for me as I'm going that way again with Nannadan.

Hopefully it may solve problems for Fiori and Sambar owners as well

Thanks Subyroo

I was stunned when I tried to buy a second hand Sambar dizzy from Japan $280 US dollars before import duties. :(

$75 dollars for an MH Barina Dizzy was much better.

This might be a handy link for anyone else looking follow Toonga's lead in the future.
The site also has huge range of other Subaru parts for a lot of different models for those searching for a hard to find part.

Yeah I looked there before making my dizzy up. $280 US dollars shipped and then import duties when it gets here.

Just reading this thread again brought back the memory of a situation I had in Townsvill NQ.

I owned a 1971 Capri 3000 V6 GT, I had trouble trying to buy a new set of contact points. The guy behind the spare parts counter, sent me to a guy who lived in a caravan park in Wulguru. He said to take my old set of contact arms and he would make me a new set.
I found the guy, he removed the points from my Capri and took them inside his annex, I was told to remain outside.
A few minutes later he came out with a new set of contacts fitted to my arms, he proceeded to put them back in an gap them.

When he was done I asked him how put the new contacts on my arms, he said it was a secret.
Whilst he was placing the points into my car he then told me of a story from back in the "old" days. He was driving from Mt Isa to Townsville and the brushes in the generator of his car gave up the ghost. He and his mate found some old fallen Iron Bark timber, made a fire and burnt it to get carbon. They then fashioned a set of brushes for the generator, they had to replace them frequently (50 miles?), but they made it to Townsville.

He started my car up and then said it badly needed a tune up, did I want him to do it?, he said it would be free. He then proceeded to remove the air cleaner, put his ear over the carby and started revving the shit out of my car, like the used to do with F1's before fuel injection, meanwhile he was playing with the mixture screw and the idle screw. All done, he took it for a road test down past the Army barracks, he had my car squealing the tyres when changing from 3rd to 4th gear.

Long story short, he said he used to be Jack Brabham's ex-F1 mechanic, whether it was BS or not, I don't know, but he certainly had my Capri running like a dream.

You would have to find a distributor with the same internal size mounting plate, the fiori plate is bigger..

It would probably be easier to modify an L series distributor and use that.
