Need help wiring up spotties to L series sportswagon

So pretty much i have wired up the spotties almostly completely except for connecting to the existing high beam wire, so that the spotties will only come on when the high beams are on. I got a test light to see which of the wires to the headlights is for the high beam except it is wired in a weird way.
Like for example when no lights are swtiched on all three wires to the headlights seem to have power to them according to the test light.
So i'm not sure how to finish wiring up the spotties,
Can anyone help?

Im not quite sure but i just done them on a toggle switch so i could still have the standard high beam as well as the spotties if needed i managed to get it so they only went on when the lights were on but i cant remember what wire it was. i think i just used the subaru manual to tell which wire it was.

yes the L series has some weird wiring- something to do with the earthing system. anyway mine were like that before- spotties would be on with no other lights on. works ok as long as youve got a toggle switch. one of the wires down near the lights will come on with only high beam.
now ive hooked mine up to ON power tho, behind the fuse box.

Hey 305kala,
What you've discovered is that the L series wiring system is an earth switching system, not a positive switching system like the "old" cars.
Here's my version of a "2 year olds drawing" of the wiring diagram for the driving lights on the L series:
Wire it like this and you should be sorted. Try using the test light connected to the positive wire - the middle one in the light clip from memory, the two on either side are the high and low beam earth wires. You should beable to work out which one you need.
Even now i'm still re visiting this diagram to wire up earth switching lights...
Cheers
Bennie
