New Forester...Thoughts, tyres, and rear space

Considering the new 09' Forester as our next and long-term vehicle. We do alot of touring around Australias coastal and mountain areas, exploring and camping. We also ski during winter, hence the need for 4WD or as subaru now puts it: AWD!
I love packing the 'L' because it has a boot big enough to house the 40l Waeco fridge long ways and our large camping storage box, plus everything else needed for camping. The 'L' seems to have so much more room than my old 99' Forester and can be packed without the need to pack above the back seat height (safety) and has the added benefit of the spare in the engine bay (saves having to remove everything in the event of a flat and frees up space in the boot).
Apparently the new Forester is bigger than the old and as such it is a vehicle we are considering along with xtrail and outlanders.
Would also in future like to fit all terain tyres (BFG)???
Anyone know how it might go off road?
Your thoughts would be appreciated;)
