Lifting Compatibility

In my garage I have an H beam and the garage is 6.4m long (wall to wall under the H Beam) I've made a special bracket with my engineer and he claims it'll be able to hold 4 tons (1 ton per bolt in safe way) easy but when I look at him and that block that we've made up. -> Reason I made the bracket with bolts attached because I do not want to disturb the H beam...


How we made it to attach? I made 15mm thick hardened steel block size of 250mm long by 120mm wide with an V shape hook (its approx 12mm thick hard steel) with weld on both sides (top and bottom) before I welded it up I drilled a small V hole to fill up with weld, I used MIG weld (with gas) for that task attached on the H Beam with 260mm bolts with a block same size as above. I've already bought 2 ton 2.5m lift Block and Tackle (or Chain Block)

The H Beam shown in photo below is mounted on brick walls on both sides so I can tell its safe.

Not an experts opinion but I wouldn't lift more then a tonne with that loop.
What are you planning to lift? A Subie is only like 1200kg lol.

dont forget to take into consideration the load from the roof already on the beam when working out the safe working loads.

Looking at it I would say there is already a fair bit of weight on the I beam. Tiles (looks like tiles going on the batten spacing) on a pitched roof (not trussed) with weight transferred to the I beam via the underpurlins and struts.

Lifting 2.5 ton would see a hell of a mess in your garage. It will however lift motors and stuff like that quite easily.

You wouldn't be able to work out exactly how much you can lift with out first working out the exact weight of the roof on the I beam.

The beam should hold a hell of a weight being supported on the walls, the only weak point i can see in this design is the weld holding the loop to the metal plate.

Yeah, Well the main reason I put that there was to remove engines from the car(s) and planning to bring home an edgebander (which is approx 600-800kgs) to work on (part of my job)

An engine is estimate around 200kilos? Talking about Commodore's V6 3.8 litre, and transmission would be approx 40kgs?

Yeah from what I can see it'll be easy but I do not intend to lift more than 800kgs - 1ton

Funny thing - I made an frame to pull out Commodore's V6 with automatic transmission still attached on an A frame that we made about 2 yrs ago, the frame I used had Eye hook on it, it was size M8 (8mm), just one and was able to lift without bending or breaking - when I was telling my mates about it - they don't believe it until I showed them, so that loop would be able to hold 1 ton I am guessing due the size and weld. But I am planning to put a chain or cable around the H beam for safety reasons (as you never know if the loop goes! so there is backup)
