just sayin gday!
gday everyone
as my name says im a subaru 1st timer, just brought myself a 92 brumby.
i'll be honest i know sweet FA about subies (im a ford man normally) and brought the brumby as a workhorse/parts chaser etc for the other toy and a brumby is a perfect size for what i need, if you cant tell im pretty excited as its my Ist 4wd too!!
i know there are prob a million posts already here but if someone could give a bit of an idea as to a couple of things to look out for etc any info would be great.
so far the only bad points ive heard about them are the cv joints with no other major things really being said (info from carsurvey.com)
only a couple of minor things with my brumby are:
sloppy gear stick.... what parts do i need to fix it?
looooong brake pedal and very spongy (has had new rotors and callipers been rebuilt) and suggestions?
has a bit of a driveline whine (has 317000km on clock... new oils needed perhaps?)
the brumby has dual fuel, the lpg convertor needs a kit, can a 'kit' be put through it myself or are they a specialty thing?
besides the little minor things shes a tidy little ute with only a couple of dents and the drivers door worse for wear from where a roo ran into it (anyone recommend a place to get good panels??)
anyway its nice to be here and part of the subaru family, look forward to learning about these little beasts. cheers
Dave

G'day, welcome. Congrats on the purchase!
Some suggestions;
Sloppy gearstick. Check out the linkage, there is a pin that goes through which is probably flogged out. It's easy to drill the hole out a little bigger and put a bolt through instead.
Spongy brake pedal. Try bleeding the brake system with new fluid. Otherwise perhaps the master cylinder needs rebuilding. I would advise getting the brakes looked at by a brake shop if the bleed doesn't fix it, don't take a chance with them!
Driveline whine is fairly normal for that many kms on the gearbox but fresh oil might help. It could also be coming from the rear diff, check the fuild in that too.
The LPG converter might have a kit available if it's a common one but you'd probably have to get this from an LPG fitter place. If it's a proper kit there may be a plaque in the engine bay somewhere from the place that did it - might be worth trying to contact them directly.
**edit - put a wanted advert up on this forum for the panels, I'm sure loads of NSW based guys on here would love to help you out!

ill check out the gear stick if i get time at work over the next few days.Seems simple enough to fix
going to bleed the brakes in the next couple of days, what type brake fluid to they use? i dont have a manual for the beatie yet.
as for oils etc i'll go over the whole car, anyone recommend a brand of oil to use and in box and rear diff?
i presume the engine will take a 20w/50 ok? (as i mentioned before i dont have a manual yet so dunno) and how many litres?
thanks again
p.s will post pics soon, and my panelbeater came round for a look and said he can get new panels so will keep you posted on those if anyone else needing anything

Welcome to the forum. Brumby's are awesome, thought that needed to be pointed out. And no, technically i don't own one, its my gf's mum's (got a targa top) which is good anyway...
Check out the tech manual in the workshop section for any subi needs as a starting point. There are a few mods in there listed for the "MY" subies - these are the model cars that the mighty brumby gets its directly interchangable parts from, other subi parts can be fitted with some mods - you'll work it out i'm sure.
Have fun mate, i'm afraid to tell you that you've just been infected with the subi bug, especially since you've found your way here

definatly been infected, always liked subies dont get me wrong, love the tough note of a wrx or any of the flat fours with a deep note so definaltly have a soft spot for them, and my girlfriends family are subie mad, her bro a wild forester gt with dog box etc, her mum an 06 impreza wagon (very nice to drive) and her dad just got a brand spanker forester.... so guess it rubbed off a little.
ok in my previous posts i mentioned my sloppy gearstick. i looked and someone has already replaced the pin with a bolt. all i can see to do is fit a sleeve to tighten the gap in the linkage. also i have oil leaking where the selector shaft is??
ive bled the brakes, bit of air came out but the pedel still a little soft, so will do them again in a few days and if it still has a soft pedal. another thing i noticed is on the 1st push on the pedel whilst driving it soft, the next push straight after its nice and firm and the brakes bite well, a master cylinder problem perhaps?
next thing is, i was offered some ford courior 16in steelies with 28in rubber which are around 7in wide. can i use these with a 6stud conversion? what lift kit height do i go. is the offset ok? (they dont have any dish to them, they off a 2005 model i think) and how will the drive shafts etc fair up? if its too much hassle and not worth it i wont bother... just like to hear your thoughts
cheers
