Gen 1 Liberty Wagon - How much room?

G'day guys,

Just wondering if the gen 1 liberty wagons are big enough to sleep in with the back seats down?

I'm looking for something to see a bit of Australia in and was originally looking at 3rd Gen (97-00) Magna's but I like the sound of the Libs off road capabilities with a 2" lift. I'm also a keen surfer and live on the Sunshine Coast so trips up the beach would definitely be on the cards.

Seems like it'd be the best of both worlds.

Is 190cm not too tall? :p

I'll probably know when I go and check one out I guess.

Hi JC, welcome to the forum.

190cm?

A Liberty would be OK so long as you like to sleep with your legs bent. :)

Cheers Jack.

Legs bent is acceptable, I wouldn't plan on sleeping in it every night so it shouldn't be too bad. Figure it'll just be handy if I end up arriving somewhere late or the weather gets nasty.

Function over comfort really :).

I've done that with queen single air mattress in back of my Gen2 wagon - and I am 183cm tall and had to bend my legs which was fine for me.
Cheers

I sleep in my Gen1 all the time. I am 185cm, if i lie diagonally my legs are straight.

my mate has a gen2 wagon he has built a false floor in that runs all the way back from the front seats. he fits a full double matress on top, and has plenty of room underneath for his surfboards and camping gear

as a touring car they are an excellent option compared to a magna!

Awesome, that's what I wanted to hear. :)

Been busy reading all the old posts (yours popped a lot) and between here and offroad subaru there's heaps of info to digest. Just have to find one for sale now, hopefully manual and minus the old airbag suspension.

Bit off-topic but how does yours handle with the lift? (as in body roll and understeer)

fine mate.

with a 2" lift, and new struts and springs it will handle beautifully

put it this way. I did my mates Gen2 about 6 months ago now. They have basically an identical suspension setup to a gen1.

he want from the original springs / struts with 300,000kms on them to a 2" kit, outback struts and heavy duty springs, 27" tyres and it handles WAY better now than it did before. like a new car. and its lifted wuite a bit, you wouldnt need to go that far if you didnt want to..

I'm pretty tall and I've been reasonably comfortable in the back of the L series a few times. Just use a decent matress and u should be fine in a Lib.

If you have not yet got yourself a Liberty you could consider the Gen 2 Liberty's they are 50mm longer. But you can sleep just as comfy in the Gen 1s
