ive just brought my first suby from a older guy. its a 1990 sportswagon and was woundering if they all came without speakers in the doors? ive got the speaker covers where they would be, and the hole in the door, but no speakers?
also does anyone know if i want to put speakers in do i have to put spaces or anything in? because it looks like when the windows are down the glass will hit the speakers?
any suggestions???

yes, youll need spacers for most speakers.
they also come with a crappy 5x7in speaker in the dash.
you will also need a special facia for your headunit, as the whole is too shallow

you dont... need spacers if you are willing to do some cutting. But they are a good idea.
yeah, facia needed too as mentioned above, should be around $50.

Or you can make a facia if you feeling cheap and are handy enough

You can fit 5s behind the original door trims no problem. I prefer the stealth installation approach; less likely of your car being stolen - apparently.
Some Ls had a metal OEM mounting plate, but for smaller speakers - I have made several over the years using MDF, and they have cleared the window mechaisims no problems
MDF sounds better (ie beefier surface for the speaker to fire from).
Mounting kits as mentioned around $50 (or keep your eyes on ebay over the next 48hrs...hot tip!)
use the centre mount dash speaker for your UHF output - I used to mount my radio over the rear ashtray behind the handbrake and use the dash speaker - a bit clearer being centre stage

Most DLs only had the one dash speaker and it was more like a 3x7" cardboard number. I've found that at least some models had wiring for door speakers even if they didn't have the speakers (part of the loom). with the standard size 4" speakers you shouldn't need spacers other that the mount that is there where they go.

i wouldnt muck around with crappy 4in speakers, just get some decent 6in's and do this...
strait into the door trim, doesnt even get close to the window mechanisms, and if you do it properly with sound deadening etc, it wont rattle
