a small oil problem....long post srry but need help :)

hey all just finsished putting my 6" lift into my new turboed touring wagon all good but ......missing badly, fouling up the plugs, dumping way too much oil out of the breathers ( i think??) we cant work it out bluesteel and i last night connected all the breathers together and ten plumbed them back into a coke bottle right we cleaned the pvc valve thats ok :) but got home i was behind him and i thought it was fuel smoke bellowing out of the car but it wasnt it was dumping oil out so i need some advice and opinions plz

we know the head gaskets are gone and im thinking possible the rings aswell now the turbo wasnt boostingg due to a cracked manifold but we ( cheers john) welded up the crack and she has boost now....the oil return pipe is connected to the turbo aswell..i havent an idea on where so much oil is comin from there was atleast 1 liter maybe more thru the enginebay only after 3 km drive back to my place..and sir will and bluesteel add to the list aswell cheers any help much appreciated guys cheers Ben

ben

the best bet is to give it all a good clean first...

then when were not so tired start it up and get it warm (it seems to be worse when it warms up)

have a good look and see which breathers its coming out of
have a good look at the exhaust to see if its fuel or oil
pull the crabkcase breather off that joins back into the manifold and check that
have a good look and see if theres any oil coming out of anywhere else too

then you can start to worry about whats actually wrong with it ;)

Its coating itself to protect against the salty Hobart air.

Self lubricating preservation System operating fine Captain.

I thought they have to leak oil?

1991 L Series wagon, white and perfectly normal apart from the ticking, no I think that is normal.

Jet boat..webbered EA81 with a hybrid tin dish welded and glued to it.

if thats the case matt.....

it dosent like the ground beneath it, as you could see exactly where we went for the entire trip by following the trail of oil

it dosent like cars around it as they got a good coating to

seems to like the clouds in the sky, it was doing a very good impersenation of them, and we all know thats the best form of flattery

and as far as protecting the car goes it even managed to coat some of the interior, and i dont think it missed anything that was under the hood, even coated the bonnet from the scoop

Bugger.
That seems excessive.

Thicker oil maybe....axle grease might work?

excessive for sure :) very lucky we didnt get pulled over for it...shoulda seen the looks we were getting jonny cleaning is the go i have a suspicion maybe the oil return pipe off the turbo?? had a squiz this morning its on but no clamp?? and remember the car didnt leak oil when i got it and does now after we played with her...but no boost i rekon has made a diference... anyway cheers Ben

My old MPFI used to do the same thing. I haven't pulled it down yet to see exactly what the problem is but i suspect rings that have worn out, oval bore (over heated serverly, adding to the problem) and maybe a hole in a piston (ran like crap).

Before the overheating, i had bypassed the crank case ventilation system, this made the oil consumption drop but not stabilise at no oil use...

If the turbo is boosting and the rings are shot, oil would be going everywhere as the crank case is also pressurising and that pressure has to go somewhere...

I hope its not the rings, it can be a big job, plus the tolerances for the gap between the piston head and the bore is so tiny that i could put money on it that you'll need new piston heads too. I've heard that Turbo piston heads arn't cheap...

On that note i've had a thought, you've said that the head gaskets are gone, what could be happening is the boost is being pushed into the oil channel that is meant to be sealed by a little rubber o ring in the head gasket, this would also pressurise the crankcase.

I'd give her a pull down, with the worst expected in mind as you do it. Better to find that its a small thing when expecting the worst than to find a big thing when expecting a small thing wrong... My way of doing it anyway (had experience with this).

Those symptoms plus the fact you cannot gain positive pressure would lead me to believe engine failure for sure. Tested compression on all 4?

yeah sweet thanks for the replies guys :) i rekon ill pressure clean the engine bay 1st then go from there :) but i rekon rings and a rebuild is on the cars the car has over heated prob half a dozen times aswell... cheers Ben

Yeah, that doesn't sound good. While you've got the engine out, send the radiator in for a check/clean. You'll be surprised how much crap can end up in the cooling system after the head gasket has blown. My last radiator was more than half blocked and could handle a day of 20 degrees...

You should document you're rebuild if this is where you end up going, would make for a good picture story board...
