having troubles fitting a steering wheel boss kit to my 84 Brumby and the autotechnica crowd reckons I must have a collapsible steering column being the reason for the problem. Does not sound like they can solve it for me.

Do MY/Brumby have collapsible steering columns as an update through the models ? somer early ones have or not have?

The spline is a coarse spline then it steps up to be a 19.96mm shaft where the boss is supposed to sit or stop. The boss looks like it is just supposed to taper out rather than to step out. The boss does not allow for a step


any ideas???

My Guess by what you are saying is that the base of the boss is too small so sit all the way down where it suppsed to, that is not uncommon with most non factory bosses. The way i get around this is to use a morse taper reamer and ream the hole out to suit the correct posisition. You can however counter bore the hole using a drill or use a die grinder to releive it.

If you have collapsed the column the top shaft will dissapear down into the rest of the steering shaft. You need to have really smacked the end of the shaft to make it colapse. If you have a tilt column the colapsable section is in the lower half. It is unlikely that will be your problem

Thanks SWK. The Brumby shaft has no taper on the shaft just a step up to 20mm. Sorry but i should have described the taper at the base of the Brumby Autotechnica boss as a chamfer. (after I have done my tax i am gonna make time to learn how to post pics)

L series have a taper below the splines. The splines outside diameter is below 16mm, shaft then steps up to 18.25mm tapering up to 20mm. I have found the L series boss inside taper needs reaming to match the step as it only goes about 2mm onto the splines before stopping. Freakin' dangerous , came on Cheap Grief when I bought it

I think i know what you mean so I would just counter bore it to fit closer to the steering column and if nessesary remove metal from the base as well.

thinking hacksaw and file, but gees after spending good money the bugger should fit as promised, just like to prove them wrong - maybe remove steering shaft to check - when i get time.
