Had a weekend of swinging spanners on "Elle", Harmonic balancer on the EJ22 has been wobbling all over the show since i got it so I thought it was a bout time to investigate.. Stripped down front of car and found one seriously munted end of crank shaft 8O , timing belt drive had about 7mm of play axially (ah now i know why it runs great one day and shite the next!) as the woodruff keyway was totally flogged out, the key was also seriously worn, about 2mm wasted away. The end of the crank was also worn as the harmonic balancer shifting forward and back had made it a "throw on from a distance " sort of fit. As i dont have a spare donk sitin in the back yard and this is my daily driver....
I BYBed to the best of my ability!
Front crank seal was replaced as all that vibration had got the better of it.
The key way was filled with metal putty and the back of the timing belt drive ground so that it would sit square on the deformed shoulder on the crank shaft. the harmonic balancer was refitted with a coke can shim so it would run true,. retaining bolt done up farkin tight.
Result .....
BEWDIFULLL!
Pulley runs true as a new one, engine runs better than it ever has, for how long we dont know, any one got a ej22 sittin round?
Also done his weekend.
Resealed rocker covers,
spaced exhaust headers down so the miss the crossmembers,
Set up thermo fans to be run from ECU with a manual overide switch for both main and a/c fans.
Now with all the exhaust vibration gone I can really feel the front wheel bearings growling!
Next job!
