Heaps of it comes down to experience. Just make sure you go out with plenty of other people who are willing to recover you when you get stuck and you learn alot.
A good website is http://www.exploreoz.com. They have a fairly comprehensive driving skills area with some good articles (altho they aren't really specifically designed to target Subaru drivers theres still some good general info).

haha i think we all still do just bomb up a hill :) i do anyway...
But for better knowledge and understanding of AWDing it will come down mostly to experience, getting hours up!

If you have mates with AWDs and you've got a few places you can try out, make a couple of weekends and keep at it and you'll feed of each others knowledge and experience, just one way of getting better.

Have fun, and be experienced so to speak ;)

Do you live in town or have property?

Safest way to learn would be off someone who actually knows what they are doing. Mates mates mates, might think they know what they are doing and it might work, but it could be dangerous, especially when it comes to recoverys.

I see your in Adelaide. Maybe a quick talk with a proper 4x4 driver trainer like Peter @ Aawen 4x4 0427 269 029 could be to your advantage.

Failing that, joining a club is a great idea as you get to hang out with people of a like mind and most clubs have driver trainers.

Join a club, there is an active Subaru 4WD club in Adelaide the link to the webiste is here http://www.subaru4wd.asn.au/frames.html To be honest if you get someone in a Suby to teach you how to in your Suby you will be less scared
