Just wondering if anyone knows how much weight can be put on the the roof of a l wagon. my roof racks look like this:

So far ive used it to move a couple of couches a wardrobe and a big office desk (not together ofcoarse) probably had about 60kg up there with the desk which is the heaviest item ive put up there. I only thought of this weight thing when reading a 4by mag which had a patrol I think, rated to 100kg on the roof.

Anyone had any problems with overloading the roof? And what happens/bends when you do overload it?

Thanks

Not sure what brand they are but they look well made and secured, I never had roof racks before, they're so handy.

most non-hardcore racks will hold about 40-60kg

what will happen if you overload them depends on whether it's the racks giving up your your roof gutters :) (and thus also depends on how the racks are mounted)

You can get very serious racks if you're looking at more weight - to have a roof-top tent for camping with yourself and the missus you'd be looking at something that would handle 120+ kg. Not sure if you can get that sort of thing for old subie gutters, or even if the gutters would handle that. I'm sure the die-hards would be able to weld something up that would clamp onto gutters in a more secure way, that might prevent the pressed metal from un-rolling.

I've got the cheapest pair of 5th-hand 1-inch tubing I could find (15 bucks), and they still handle 50+ kg.

well i know the roof itself isn't made to hold 120kg...

i have a permanent 'feature' as a result of having a picnic on it with my better half..

I'd think if you can put an office desk up there then those rack posts can hold about 120lbs and in the center of the roof i wouldent put to much! But the side's by the rain gutters can hold pretty much!:) Hope i helped you out a little.

G'Day!
