Nah i am wrong above...
I am looking at this chart of 1989 L series Dual Range box -
1st 3.545
2nd 1.947
3rd 1.366
4th 0.972
5th 0.780
Reverse 3.416
Hi Range - 1.000
Lo Range - 1.592
Would that be correct above?
Cheers

something came in my mind is to install/use 5th gear in Liberty AWD box.
Just a theory if it would fit or not - saves me looking for one because anyway i wanted to get 1.59 lo range gearset.

Is the gearbox ratios correct above? Has anyone thought about the swap?

I think there is at least two ratios in L 5MT's, and may depend on final drive ratio and when it was made and how the assembler felt at the time

When I built the Liberty FT4WD box I found all the gears in the L series box were the same ratio as the Liberty D/R box.
Sorry, can't help with the ratios anymore then that.

There are two different L series gearsets which are interchangable in the part time boxes , basically turbo and non turbo . 1st is the same but the turbo or RX gearset has slightly larger gaps between the ratios and ends up with a taller 5th . I did look at this in my WSM and off the top of my head the two 5th ratios are ~ 0.76 (T) and ~ .83 (NA) .
What you'll find is that 1st and 2nd mainshaft gears are machined into the mainshaft itself and without fabrication cannot be altered . You could mix n match any part time combination of 3rd 4th 5th , 1st and 2nd HAVE to match whatever the mainshaft started out as ie close or wide ratio .
The BIG exception is the L full time box because the countershaft is unique and while the countershaft gears are the same turbo ratios the way they mount to the FT countershaft is different to the part time turbo box .
Because no bugger wanted to sell me a DR FT box mine is being built from a Vortex SR FT basis , so dual range cases /gears and mainshaft are being grafted in . My DR gears will be the taller ones because it will effectively give me 6 forward gears ie 1-5 in low and then into high . I guess you could say its really like a 5spd with a splitter but the idea of splitting every gear Road Ranger style could be awkward with 2 gear sticks .
Accctuually I suppose you could rig up another vac actuator and have the solenoid switch on the gearstick to push/pull the linkage Eaton style ? If you've ever driven a box with an air shifted splitter you'd know that you flick the switch before you lift off and the torque loading won't let the air ram operate the splitter until the drive loads off . So its basically flick/lift prod and away she goes - in the 18 spd ones anyway .
Am I sick and twisted or what , cheers A .
